The 970 is not going to be a good card for 4K monitors.  By the time 4K monitors are the norm, the texture sizes of games will have also expanded and the 3.5GB of video RAM is going to be a huge bottleneck for a 4K monitor.  Some games are already showing that to be a problem.

The 970 is the best bang for the buck card in the HD (1920x1080) market though.

best bang for the buck is my middle name. That link I put up showed many games hitting above 3.5gb now with the higher resolutions and latest games.

But $500+ for a vid card, makes me sweat. Actually I really only want to spend 960 prices but the performance/cost ratio is so good I'm jumping to the 970. Plus a 970 should drive my monitor like theres no tomorrow. 1080p, beautiful picture, led. Give me a taste of what the new Maxwell architecture, RAID array style striping read/write of vram.
moar speed captain.....

evga or gigabyte, decisions, decisions...have good experiences with both hardware makers................

The new fxaa is very nice. I have AA off in all areas and I get minimum jaggies.

Wait for Pascal. They should all have much more VRAM, but I can't speak to price issues.

I would say that if there is a video wall to be hit, in my current pc config, then the 970 is it. I will be dumping it into a 2.0 slot to begin with. I should get a great match up anyways, I think.
newegg dropped the price to $329, w/$20 rebate, that's $309, for the gigabyte g1 I'm about ready to bite. not gonna get much better offer unless used or refurb, which I shy away from.

They are correct about the 980 Ti, and the 970. I have all of them, and still see games crashing in 4k. They are correct in that article at PCGamer that you can do 4k, but there are still issues. Number one is that most titles were created with options that are still not possible at 4k (the Supersampling option for one). You can use SS, but if you mix it with other options like AA, or 4K textures you could easily fill even 6Gigs of memory. SS usually comes with options to render at SS 2.25, or 4.0, which is 1.5 times higher resolution, or double resolution. If you mix 4k textures, 4k shadows, AA at x8, and SS at 4.0 you are going to crash your game. The whole point is to determine the limits and once you find those limits leave the options alone. You do not need 4k textures at 4k resolution, or AA either, so you can save yourself a lot of room in memory by just turning those off.

Since you are planning on sticking to HD resolutions the 970 is perfect for you. The commenters in the PC Gamer 4k topic failed to see the one advantage in 4k gaming that is important to someone in my age category. Screen size makes it easier to aim.

sure thing altho the real test would be ah3 released. I will run some benchies and post.

I decided on g1 cuz it had 1 more fan, dual bios, slightly higher stock clock speed, any bad review was the same complaint for all manufacturers.
it was, $358, but I placed it in my newegg cart along with the evga equivalent. newegg dropped the price on the g1 while I was contemplating which 1 to get. g1, with rebate, will be $309/ free delivery.

ordered sunday, 4-7 business day delivery. Its Tuesday late, the G1 is online. I luv Newegg...

preliminary, alpha rocks at 55-60fps. The 970 eats the AH coding now, cannot wait for the final release.

I have DSR enabled, global mode, all profile options are off, or at 3D app setting, high performance.... same settings I was using. card is very quiet.

It would be interesting to benchmark a few of our cards to see how different setups perform. It took me a couple weeks to decide on a 390 8gb vs a 970 4gb.  I wish i could have bought both but i ended up going with the 390 .  We should figure out a way to bench them in the alpha and see how it turns out.

You gentlemen with PC that can run NVIDIA 900 series or AMD R200-300 series, know you will never have any problems with the alpha. The alpha is to get everyone else's antique cards and PC, with in reason, to work in the new game. In PC life spans, 3 years is just on the line for some. Think about all the guys who have 5-10 year old hardware who still have to feed their families.

This post is turning into Model A Day rally with a few people showing up in original 1960's Rally Mini-Coopers competing in the rally for the apple pie at the finish line.

OK you guys win...... bon appétit... :aok

win?

some of us have/had old cards. was nice to have peeps offer info on whats really important and necessary. anyone who is buying now, will be buying 900 series, and better. That's just whats out there. Skuzz did project that the final release "may" need a 1GB minimum vram card.

the rest of my pc is just as old to, but I planned ahead when I built it, it will handle a titan if I wanted.
I got the 970 based on price, a 960 or 950 would prolly work fine for even less. its important that you have a cpu with some ghz to drive it. nothing less than 3.6GHz cpu would do, imo.

1st Unigine Valley benchie was 5100......

If I recall correctly, on my last two upgrades I spent around $300 each time.  That was a time span of about 4 to 5 years, grabbing the minimal each time and using a lot of things that were donated and scrounged to boot.

I say that is a pretty great bargain to get that kind of bump in that ballpark pricing, especially since we are anticipating the new coad to rely heavily on gpu.  However, I am still very hopeful that my last upgrade will hold up as it does seem to be capable.

So, congratulations folks, it is good news and does encourage me to continue to experiment with SLI and keep the eagle eye out for some basement bargains.  Eventually I might be due for an upgrade, but I am encouraged that, right now, I can feel fortunate enough to invest $2000 into 4 wheel drive backup vehicle for work, rather than stashing $1000 for one of those mega cards.

Wasnt trying to offend anyone bustr..... but alot of people are wondering what card  to upgrade to in the near future, so why not put up some info that would help them decide? The cards we are talking about are right around the 300 dollar range , not some 6-700 dollar cards .

Oh and BTW, i have a family to feed as well.
