Need Advise On Upgrading/Replacing Wireless Router
« on: September 13, 2015, 05:05:35 PM »
I currently am using a Linksys E1000 wireless router that is setup in the south end of my house and I think it may be time to replace it. So I am looking for some expert advise before I buy.

FYI . . .  our electronics consists of laptops, tablets and cell phones.

When I test speed on my laptop while in the same room as the router, it indicates speeds of like 50-55mbps.

When I test my 2-year old cell phone in the same room, I get speeds of like 22-29mbps.

When I move my laptop to the North end of my house, I get indicated speed of like 35mbps.

Now, I am looking at replacing the Linksys with TP-Link TL-WR841ND Wireless N Router - 4x 10/100Mbps LAN Ports, 300Mbps, 802.11n, 2 Detachable Omni Directional 5dBi Antennas and I would like to know if this is a good choice.

I would also appreciate any advice you experts might be willing to share regarding my wireless situation. Do I really need to replace the Linksys router or do I need to move it?

Thanks in advance,
VanceVP

There is so much on wireless properties its hard to know where to start. What speed do you get out of our ISP

Are you looking for higher speeds, throughput, data transfers, etc?

Get a program called wifi analyzer on a tablet and you could see what other wifi is around your channel. Might be something as easy as changing channels on the wifi. If you do streaming and your wifi transmits on the 5 ghz band, connect some to that. Note - 5ghz has less range then 2.4

If you do want a good router and dont mind spending extra dollars, get one that has gigabit wifi. In order to take full advantage of it, all of your wireless adapters mist be gigabit rated or you will never see your full speed out of the gigabit wifi.

I use a Linksys/cisco WRT610N as my router. I run 4 computers off it hard wired and any number of wireless items. We have 4-5 laptops 5 phones and a couple of tablets able to go at any time. I did have a dead spot on one side of the house but bought a Netgear wireless booster and my signal jumped on that end of the house and solved all the issues with it dropping out for the phones and such.

Works great and I've had it for years.

I've been VERY happy since switching to Apple's Airport Extreme. Coupled with the Airport Express, I can extend wireless  70 ' across the house and beyond.

VanceVP, if you have a ok wifi router you can extend your  throughput Wifi to other rooms using  wifi repeater(s).

I recently upgraded my old D-Link router with the NetGear Nighthawk AC1900 Dual-Band router and I couldn't be happier.  I like the ability to run both a 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz wireless network and if I have guest staying over, I can set up a guest network for them and keep them completely off the main home network.  Another nice feature is a USB 3.0 port that allows you to connect an external hard drive to the router for cloud storage.  Wireless coverage is great, our next door neighbor lost their internet for a couple of days and I let them leach off our guest network until they got their internet back.

This Asus router is great! I would definitely recommend it as the features and range are really impressive.

Consumer products = consumer radios, ie pretty meh.

If you want decent range and coverage look for a second hand Ruckus ZoneFlex AP on ebay.
