F-35B takeoff/landing procedures on HMS Queen Elizabeth
« on: September 21, 2015, 02:23:34 AM »
I had recently seen "Impossible Engineering" about HMS QE.

I noticed that not only F-35B would use Ski-jump for takeoff to shorten the takeoff and increase TO weight, it would also use short landing from astern instead of vertical landing (with crabbing) in order to increase "bring back" weight.

Yet another Brit's innovation for naval aviation after ski-jump: VTOL -> STOVL -> STOSL...

It is particularly interesting because it is radically different from USMC operations - that also ignores ski-jump at all.

BTW Harrier was not designed to perform ordinary landings due to weak under-wing weels.

Saw it use the ski jump a few weeks ago while I was standing outside the hangar at work....pretty cool to watch.

Catapults are superior.  It is an unfortunate limitation the RN will have to accept with the QE class, one that will limit its potential to a significant degree.

I think the bloody Queen should be satisfied with RMS Queen Elizabeth, she doesn't need two bleedin ships named after her.  :old:

I am only replying because "Crabbing" was mentioned...

Carry on...
The boiling pot is put away and the crab has gone back to sea...
