« on: October 15, 2015, 06:36:34 PM »
Whats the difference in the GP, HC, SAP and AP bombs, I use to have it written down, but have lost the paper. Thank you.

GP = General Purpose. The standard thing.
HC or LC = High Capacity / Less Casing (which esseantially is the same thing). Does only 75% damage a GP bomb of same size would do, but at 125% damage radius.
SAP = Semi Armor Piercing. 125% damage for only 33% of damage radius.
AP = Armor Piercing. 150% damage for only 25% of damage radius

Keep in mind  bombs make much more bang for pound than larger ones. As a reference (GP bombs):

100lb - 156lb of damage
250lb = 313lb of damage (= damage rating of a town or factory building)
500lb = 550lb of damage
1000lb = 1000lb of damage
2000lb = 1718lb of damage
4000lb = 3125lb of damage (only theoretical, the 4k bombs in game are all HC/LC)

All damage rating for objects (as can always be seen in options/arena setup/object settings) are given in 1000lb.

Due to the current bomb modeling, which simply adjusts flat damage/radius instead of modeling armor penetration, it rarely (if ever) makes sense to chose one of the few planes with an SAP/AP loadout option over another with pure HE loadout. (for LW MA purposes)
For example the G4M with 800kg AP still has not enough capacity to sink an undamaged CV, while a lot of other bombers easily do.
Or for CV planes, the SBD with 1600lb AP has still less punch than a fully loaded F4U-D.

Was it the same in RL?  Or did the armor penetration give the SBD a bigger punch against a ship?

ty bowhunter i was looking for something just like that (math is not really my friend) whats the 1800KG come out too? the Ju87 has GP and the He111 has HC. And the 1600Lbs on the SBD.

Also are all torpedos the same damage? I know the allied and axis have different run times, but they do the same damage? seems odd.

I always thought the Japanese Type 91 torpedo had a larger warhead than US torpedoes but that might be the Type 93 "Long Lance" that I might be confusing it with.

Does anyone know the blast radius as a function of bomb lbs?

The 125% radius for the 4000 lbs HC bombs results in a huge area of destruction. One has to remember that area goes like the radius squared so 25% extra radius means 66% more area - and this is relative to the base radius that for 4000 lbs should be pretty big - but how big?
I want to know how many 500 lbs bombs would it take to cover the area of one cookie.

I always wanted to test that, but I just don't have the time to create a custom map with an appropriate target area.
