That R/L P38's weren't supposed to fly upside down for longer than 10 seconds.

Indeed.

so yes, I did know.

Spitfires, Hurricanes, P-40s, P-51s and Mosquitoes also share that limitation.  Not sure about Russian or German stuff.

IIRC it was due to the oil circulation not working when inverted.

Yep.  It was modeled in Air Warrior which would be cool if it was modeled in here as well.

Wasn't only inline engines.  I remember Earl (the AW Earl) describing how the P47N had an oil system that would allow inverted flight more or less indefinitely, and that this was a big difference from the 47Ds he flew during the war.
