Ran across this while cleaning up some old links. Anyone have anymore information on this?

The primary focus of the discussion is Bunte's plunge his burning Mustang into a lake after hitting a power line strafing on April 5, 1944. The question was 'which lake" and could it be salvaged?

Hofer was hit strafing Mostar airfield (Yugoslavia - July 2, 1944) and crashed there.

Yes Bunte was flying Salem Rep. it seems and amazing he survived the way he came down. What is strange is how little info and discussion there is after all the interest.

The plane in question is NOT "Salem Representative". It is QP-L but a previous L.

So what happened to the original Salem Rep.?  I remember someone else flying it on the Russia Shuttle mission I think, and perhaps going down on that mission? The same mission that the Kidd was on when he went in. But his bird had been assigned to someone else as he wouldn't take his shots? But he was added to the mission at the last moment. This is all off the top of my head but that is what I remember.

42-106924 QPL became QP-F. Salvaged after Taxi accident at Debden on 7-17-44

Hofer had P-47C QPL Missouri Mauler but Bunte got P-51B QPL as primary when the 4th converted from P-47s in February 1944. (1st Lt Bunte outranked him as Hofer still F/O)
