Mac?
« on: January 02, 2016, 01:00:25 PM »
I bought an IPhone the other afternoon and have since decided that I am willing to give Apple a shot. I'm doing some research, and didnt find anywhere mentioning Aces High being run by any Mac OS. Any advise?

The requirements talk about several flavours of Windows but nothing about Mac.

Someone has mentioned Mac somewhere on these forums, IIRC it was a dual boot system running Windows for the game. That would most likely work, the hardware is mostly identical to a PC. A virtual machine might also work, but you'd lose more than a little of computing power for running it.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

You pay twice as much for hardware that is five years old at best, and for the pleasure of having the manufacturer tell you what you can and cannot install on it. Sort of like what Windows 10 is becoming. What more do you need to know?

No sarcasm intended, but an honest question....When you say that Mac tells you what you can and can't do, can you explain a little? I started using an Iphone yesterday, so have no experiance, positive or negitive, with Apple products

Thanks  :salute

I could write pages and pages about that.

One thing that makes the PC such an excellent device for gamers is that you can change it to suit your tastes. The Apple ideal is to keep those changes under their control. So, if the hardware or app is not acceptable to Apple then you simply will not be able to use it. Probably they do that to prevent instability issues, but when I buy hardware then I own it. The last time I had an issue like that was with a Compaq computer, which currently occupies the lower position of an outhouse in lower Alabama. If Windows heads in that direction then I will likely switch over to Linux.

So far I like the tier leaders in technology known as the MISO group. That group includes Microsoft, Intel, SAP, and Oracle. Apple is not part of the equation. It will not hurt me at all if that group drops Microsoft, because of their poor leadership.

Apple is terrible overpriced junk. With android it's less expensive, With more features, Making android a better value. With Apple you're paying a lot for the name. This directly translates to mac vs PC, For example with a mac you're paying four grand for a six core piece of junk you could buy an equivalent PC for a grand.

Mac pro:
6-Core and Dual GPU
3.5GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5 processor
16GB 1866MHz DDR3 ECC memory
Dual AMD FirePro D500 with 3GB GDDR5 VRAM each
256GB PCIe-based flash storage

$3999

PC equivalent:

i7-4790K quad core 8 thread K means overclockable
Noctua CPU cooler to overclock
Motherboard with tons of features including USB 3.0!
32GB 1866 4x8gb doube the MAC's
Samsung 850EVO 500gb! Double the Mac's capacity!
Caviar blue 1TB 7200RPM for all your crap you don't need on your SSD
GTX 770 2GB
DVD R+W because CD's/software/why not it's $15
Noctua fans
$1385

Basically you spend half the money and get equivalent performance, With some areas exceeding the mac. I have you double the storage on the SSD, An extra hard drive just because, and double the RAM as a bonus. The PC can be overclocked and upgraded, Two factors you should consider when buying a computer.

Mac is stuck with few programs and games because the majority of things are for windows. Mac also has proprietary connectors like the thunderbolt. Have fun paying $40 for a thunderbolt cable, My USB 3 cable costs $3. No joke, A six foot cable from the apple store costs $39.00. Feel free to google it.

Honestly, If I were you, I would take back your iPhone and get a galaxy S6 or a Note phone. You really don't want to be drug into the apple ecosystem, Forced to find a workaround to play games and run programs.

Apple has historically held about a 5% market share in the PC market.  Much of that has been dominated by graphic design, desktop publishing and advertising shops where Apple made significant early inroads.

That said, as a software developer (outside of the desktop publishing/graphic design niche) where would you spend your development time?  Developing for 95% of the market or less than 5% (remembering most of the 5% is business).  For obvious reason choices are limited in the Mac world.

Mac vs PC played out much like Beta vs VHS.  Even Apple recognized they'd lost and had to reinvent themselves, thus the advent of IPods and IPhones.  Both those were really innovative ideas and gave Apple a first mover advantage but Android quickly caught up.  I don't know the numbers but I'd be surprised if Android didn't currently lead the market simply due to the number of/diversity of the manufacturer/developer bases.

Diversity in manufacturing and development breeds competition and competition is good for consumers.  Apple controls it's own manufacturing, development and thus pricing.  Apple has traditionally had a reputation for stability of it's operating systems.  That's not surprising given the limited offerings and that alone may have benefitted Apple in retaining it's niche market.

With Android hammering Apples IPhone market share Apple's had to reinvent itself again with "Dick Tracy watches".  Unless they can come up with a better idea than that there will soon be a lot of disappointed Apple shareholders and when that stock price starts to drop there will be staff layoffs and product line consolidation.

In full disclosure I've never owned an Apple product.  I've had several PC's and an Android smart phone.  You, of course, can do whatever you want but I'd keep the bigger picture in mind as I made my decision.

Android and Tizen watches were around long before the iWatch.
