The Shanara Chronicles; New MTV fantasy series
« on: January 07, 2016, 10:50:59 AM »
Long-time fan of the Shanara book series, by author Terry Brooks. I'm always skeptical when a treasured book is turned into a movie or TV show, but I have to say, MTV has done a more than credible job, based on the two-hour series premier episode, "Chosen". This series actually starts out where book 2, "Elfstones of Shanara", begins, though it does make some references to the first book, "Sword of Shanara". I won't include any spoilers, though I will say there are some changes to the story line, though the original characters are all who, when, and generally where there were in the book. The cinematography is breathtaking, taking a page from "Force Awakens" in it's use of actual sets and make-up, in conjunction with CGI and the spectacular scenery of New Zealand. Acting is generally very good, as is the dialog. John Reyes Davies plays the Elven king, Eventine, and does a very decent job. Not your usual made-for-TV abomination, like some of the SiFi channel garbage of late. Very high production values, and a real commitment to the feel of the books. Check it out, if you're a fan of the books, or of the fantasy genre in general. Again, without giving too much away, the occasional remnants of "the old world" sprinkled throughout the scenery provides important glimpses and clues to the background of this fantasy universe without getting in the way of the current story.

"MTV fantasy series"

SO MUCH wrong with those words being strung together into one concept.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

I don't think you can call this a reality series unless you're on drugs.

I had concerns for sure, but will be watching it. Though I am bummed to know my favorite book is left out. Though it was so long ago, it will take a bit to come realize where I  in the series. My wife just gave me blinkblink when I saw the first ad for it lol.

I watched it a few nights ago and would agree with everything you said Sabre.  Although I don't recall the race to become one of the Chosen, the rest of the show brought back a lot of memories.  I was a bid disappointed with the Druids Keep as it was portrayed but the characters attitudes and the scenery are spot on.

I bought the Sword in 1983 and have been a fan ever since.  Christmas this year brought me the Genesis of Shannara trilogy in paperback to add to the collection.

It's about damn time MTV put out something worth watching.

PS. You misspelled Shannara.   <grammar>  :police:
