Making a Murderer
« on: January 10, 2016, 10:18:31 AM »
I've said many times I'm a long time fan of documentaries. Good documentaries are gold. This one is platinum. It's more addicting than crack or heroin (I've never done either, but feel confident in the comparison). If you only stream one series in your lifetime, this is the one.

If you've ever had any reasonable doubts about the integrity of our law enforcement and justice system watching the Netflix original series Making A Murderer will blow your freaking mind.

I started hearing strong statements about this series about a week ago and decided to check it out Friday night. WOW is an understatement. After watching the first episode I was hooked and binged the rest of the series. I would go back and rewatch episodes before moving forward just to make sure I understood what I had just seen.

"Can the police really do that?" "Are prosecutors really that crooked?" "Are the courts really that stacked against an innocent man?" The answer to all those questions was sadly and painfully, "Yes." What's worse is that a guilty man was walking the streets continuing to commit unspeakable crimes while an innocent man was serving hard time.

Without giving any spoilers, the injustice done to Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey make the horror stories you've heard about Russia and the old East German justice system sound like kiddie bedtime stories.

Watch this documentary series. It will forever change your beliefs in our justice system. And drive this into your children's heads... NEVER interview with Police without an attorney present (and pray that attorney is actually on your side).
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

Haven't watched a minute of the show, but I know there are always 3 sides to the truth. I have, though, read a few articles about the case and the show, since it's been in the news. From what I understand, the producers of the show left out A LOT of evidence that was presented in the case, evidence that pretty much locked up the conviction in the eyes of the jury.

Again, haven't seen it, but from everything I've read, the show has a very clear agenda.

There are plenty of people in our CJ system who want to do the right thing. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of people who do not.

A documentary is designed to show what ones opinion is and nothing more. It used to be different but not today. Most these days are filled with half truths and downright falsehoods. Watch it for entertainment but put nothing into what you see as real life.

First, you need to watch it before discounting the content. Even if you completely cut out the 2nd case, you will have serious doubts in the integrity of our justice system. Of course after seeing how badly they railroaded Steven on the first case, you can't help but take everything presented in the 2nd with a grain of salt.

The case made against Brendan is just rage inducing. Hey, let's take a special needs kid, give him a corrupt defense attorney and use him as a pawn against his uncle. There's no way (even if there's evidence not shown in the doc) you can convince me Brendan got a fair trial and representation. The detectives used absolutely no ethics when dealing with him. He was an innocent pawn and none of his "confession" matches the DNA evidence. Not one bit.

NEVER interview with Police without an attorney present

Very wise advice.

Back when I did criminal defense work, I once figured that 80% or more of my clients would never have been convicted had they simply kept their mouths shut.  Arrested, probably, but convicted, probably not.  The ones most likely to fall into this group were the ones who had no previous experience with being in trouble.  They figured that reasonable people could simply talk things out and everything would be OK.

I imagine that the LEO people in this group might be able to confirm this phenomenon.

People in power have been doing this since our species decided to place 1 above another.
Why you so surprised.

Western Euro's who help create the modern judicial system corrupted it right out of the box. Having said that, thank god its far and few between, that most want justice, not hashes on a career stick.

I watched it and it is really worth watching.
Yes they did leave some of the evidence out, the phone calls for 1 in the second offense. The interrogation of Dassey I thought was sad. Really goes to show how far a investigator will go to get a conviction without seeking the truth. Whether Steve Avery is guilty? Was there really enough beyond reasonable doubt?
Brendan Dassey"s full interrogations are on Youtube and the transcripts are on the web.
If someone wants more information goto reddit MAM.

It is worth watching.

It is real life just like the the OJ and Nicole Brown case was.

I can see a lock headed our way but I still gotta say I find it a little disturbing that one needs to watch a movie to figure out how voracious and consequently dangerous our criminal justice industry has become. But as they say it's always darkest before the dawn. Let's hope 21st century accountability can offer some relief.
