Idea for Limited Customization
« on: March 07, 2016, 04:19:33 PM »
This is a random idea I had on the main board for a means of allowing limited customization of aircraft. Basically, it would use decals to allow a simple means of players to customize an aircraft beyond just selecting a preexisting historical skin. Here's how it works:

The player would go to the Hangar, where they can click a "Customize" button. This brings up a new menu with several options:

1) Base Camouflage: This would be your basic skin, consisting of the camo patterns, stencils, and other universal details.
2) Roundel: Select your roundel variation. The available roundels would be determined by the base camo pattern.
3) Number Style: This would vary depending on the aircraft. IE P-51s could have options like the 8th Air Force squadron/aircraft codes, or you can use just a straight-up number.
4) Number: A text entry box to enter the number you want displayed.
5) Squadron Decal Location: Pick where you want the squadron badge, if applicable.
5a) Squadron Decal Upload
6) Personal Decal Location: Pick where you want your personal artwork displayed, if applicable.
6) Personal Decal Upload

So using the F4U-1A as an example, you'd see these options:

Base Camouflage

( ) USN Tricolor
( ) USN Dark Sea Blue
( ) Royal Navy
( ) RZNAF Tricolor

Roundel
( ) US Blue Surround
( ) US Red Surround
( ) Royal Navy
( ) RNZAF

Number Style
( ) US Navy
( ) USMC
( ) Royal Navy
( ) RNZAF

Number
[ Text ]

Squadron Decal Location
( ) Nose
( ) Forward Fuselage
( ) Tail

[ Upload ]

Personal Decal Location
( ) Nose
( ) Forward Fuselage
( ) Tail

[ Upload ]

Different aircraft could add different options. IE P-51s and P-47s could have radio buttons for Invasion Stripes (Full, Underside Only, None), or a color select for the anti-glare panels, etc.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

I think some form of this implementation is a good idea.   I wonder if would reduce HTC's bandwidth requirements regarding the loading of skins, since instead of 32 wholly different options for each skin, there would only be a handful of base camo options and the rest is smaller stuff like insignias, group color schemes, nose art, etc.

I don't know if you can allow people to upload nose art though because of swastikas, offensive images, etc.  Unless they must go through HTC review first.

I also think a choice of dirt/grime/weathering/fading/paint chipping would be cool - none, minor, medium, and heavy.

by the time I would finish selecting all the options, i would be out of beer and sleepy.

imagine having another 5000 personal decals on your folder and having them displayed everytime you came close to another plane.  dont you think that would slow some of the older computers?  not including that most of those skins would have to be done again.

your plan is a bit to ambitious.  actually way too many selections if you ask me. and just so you know there's so many combination on the number thingy, 111....
