If they still have any redness from insect bites, have those checked out for bot fly larva. Common thing that happens to north Americans going down there for a visit.

They took a ton of bug repellant. Mostly they stayed in a cabin but on nights they didn't they slept with Mosquito nets. Ironically the locals didn't use the nets.
