Allied and Alone
« on: April 24, 2016, 02:20:40 PM »
Just saw this 3-part documentary called "Alliert og Alene" (Allied and Alone) about the invasion of Norway in 1940. Told by surviving Norwegian and Allied soldiers who fought there. I was very impressed by it. Both the storytelling and recreations were excellent. I'm sure this doc will be translated to other languages in short order. Probably by the BBC in English. Our Nordic friends can probably watch it for free over at nrk.no right now. I thought the visual effects were very impressive, not only for a documentary, but for any TV production. Recommended.

A fascinating war in Norway very few really know about. Finnmark and the combat there at the end of WW2 was a fascinating read. I didn't know Great Britain planned to invade Norway themselves to gain access to the Swedish iron mines so they could destroy them and pull Germany into a new front to the north away from France. Or the combined British, French forces that defended Norway in 1940.

Then there was that use of German POWs until 1946 to clear land mines. Was it true the Germans after clearing a field were forced to walk back over it to make sure it really was cleared? I saw a casualty list for allied and Norwegian mine clearing crews vs German POW crews. I guess Norway was a tad upset about being occupied... :O
