Help with new build
« on: April 29, 2016, 02:26:39 PM »
I am getting ready to start on the new machine and need some help. I am using my old hard drive that has Windows 8.1 installed and I want to run Windows 7 on my new rig. Everything else will be new. From reading different sites it looks like it might get sketchy if I don't do it right. I don't have the versions that allow downgrading. Don't really care if I lose everything. Any advice will be appreciated.

Donnieboy, start by reading the last few new computer threads in this section. There's plenty of good comments.

At the very basics, building a computer starts by determining the main purpose it will be used for. Supposing it's gaming, the examples in the posts referred to should give a good direction. After knowing what it will be used for the next step would be budget. Let us know those two things and you'll get more answers than you'd care to read.

The phrase "lose everything" leaves me a little confused. Do you mean that you have something saved on the hard disk you're planning to salvage, but you don't mind losing it? If so, the preferred way would be to copy the files to an external disk or a memory stick, depending on the amount. You'll have to wipe everything off the disk anyway when installing it into a new build. Then again, new hard disks aren't that expensive, roughly 5 to 10% of the total.

A very rough sketch: an Intel 2 or more cores processor running at 3 GHz or above, 8 to 16 GB of memory, GeForce GTX 960 or a better video card, a good quality 500 to 750 W power supply depending on the other components. Plus of course a well breathing roomy case, a motherboard suitable for the processor etc. That should allow you to enjoy most any game on the market at the moment.

I've got an older system by today's standards that still runs the game well by my standards.

Oh I have all of the other hardware ready to go. Just wanted to use the old HD and dvd/cd rw. The HD has Windows 8.1 and I have a new Windows 7 disc I want to run on this pc. It will only be used for AH and maybe DCS. I'm looking for advice on the best way to replace the Windows 8 with Windows 7.

Mount the drive, reformat it (you'll lose everything on it) and do a clean install of the new operating system then go download all your drivers (motherboard, video card, etc.).  Anything other than a clean install will create conflicts in the OS's and the drivers.

If you have files you want to save you'll have to back them up to some type of external media before dismounting the HD from the old system.
I edit a lot of my posts.  Get used to it.

Note that the reformatting is part of the installation process, you don't have to do it separately. Simply boot your new build with the Win7 installation disk, select Install and when you see the screen showing your partitions simply delete each one of them. If you want to install Windows on a smaller partition than the entire disk, create one. Then just install Windows to that partition, again no formatting needed. The process will also automatically create a small partition of 100 Mb for the system to use.

Thanks for all the help!  :aok Everything went very smoothly. The last time I re-used an old HD I had to "Format C".  :bhead
I haven't made any changes to BIOS or video card settings. Still reading instructions.
I did a test run on AHIII and am very pleased with the performance. Steady 60 fps on-line attacking a v-base at default settings. Before w/ old system was 9-10 in the tower with all settings at min. And AHII with all settings @ max w/ 60 fps.

One last hint: Before you start getting a gazillion updates, go to Windows update/Settings and uncheck the "Give me recommended updates...". That alone has so far prevented the Win10 related stuff. If you already have installed the 150+ updates, you can do a rollback using System Restore to the point where you had all your motherboard drivers installed but no updates yet.

I actually turned the update settings to only install if approved by me during the install. Excellent advice. I will not be upgrading to 10 if I can help it.

Now what is everyone doing for anti-virus software? My other machine never had any as it was only used for AH and was NEVER used for web browsing, other than known sites for specific software/driver downloads. Never had any issues. Seems the email and hinky web sites are where all the mal-ware comes from...
