GTX1080?
« on: May 25, 2016, 04:22:00 PM »
Will my Alien 51 R2 330 WATT handle this card?
My present card is GTX970 and works fine.

I think it's under the "official" requirement, however if you're running a 970 ok, the 1080 power requirement is probably pretty close to the 970 is currently, I'd guess you'ld be OK.  The current 1080 requirements on all the stores info sheets online I've seen is minimum 500 PSU, and that's the same requirement of the current 970s on the same info pages/sheets.

Hard to say for sure though - you can pick up a 500 or slightly larger PSU for under 50 USD$ now pretty easily.  If you can't or don't want to upgrade the PSU, consider the 1070, it'll absolutely have less power draw than the 970, and if the 1080 overwhelms your PSU, that'd be the next best option IMO.  1070 will supposedly be as fast and even faster in some cases than the current Titan/980ti.  For less than 400$.

If you can post the exact model number/type of the PC you have, it'd make things easier.  Most PCs have a power supply unit that is upgrade-able, you just buy a new one and pop it in and reconnect all the cables to their specific points, but some brand name/propreitary systems can be a bit of a PITA when it comes to putting in new PSUs, others here will sound off about that I'm sure once you post the computer model number/etc.

If it's an easy swap, there are piles of 500w PSUs out there for 50 or 60$, the best ones would cost closer to 80$, but you can get a perfectly decent gold rated 500w PSU for 50$ right now from a number of manufacturers, more than sufficient for what you're after.

We've got a 34" 1440p 100hz lcd on one of our systems now too, you'll probably be fine with either the 1070 or 1080, but IMO pushing that much screen at 1440p, you'll be better off with a 1080, and if you have to upgrade the PSU for that, 50$ is NBD I'm sure.  You might get away with the one you've got, as the 970 is supposed to require a 500w PSU too, but I'd like to see some tests run on your current system right now to see if the 970 is being throttled by lack of power, it wouldn't surprise me if your card right now isn't running to its full potential due to being starved for power, but it also wouldn't surprise me if it's running as normal too.  Hard to say without checking.

You asked: Have DELL Alien 51 R2 with 330 PSU,would like to upgrade to 550PSU, will this PSU fit my computer?
Big Al: First of all this PSU is 850 watts, not 550 watts. The best thing to do is to measure your existing PSU and the available space in front of it, and also the width. Then you can compare the measurements with the published measurements of this PSU. Also don't forget to give at least 1.5 inches of additional space for the front to fit the modular cable connectors.

This is the responce I got from NEWEGG.

Swinger, is your case a big space age looking thing?  I googled your system, and there are ample pics of it open, and the space where the PSU is looks like a bracket on the lower corner.  You need to open it up and measure it, and make sure a 500+PSU fits in there.  By the looks of it, IMO it should, but check just in case.  So far as replacing it, it shouldn't be too difficult, all the cables will come with it, and it's just a matter of re plugging in the new cables where the old ones led to, if you aren't familiar with what each one is for.  Again, ample youtube vids on how to do this.

1080s out today, I've got 2 of the founders, and am going to pick up 2 of eVGAs ACX3.0 dual fan cooler ones as well when they come in for another system.

This may sound like heresy but the PSU doesn't have to be in the case. I gave a 750W PSU to a friend who put a real video card in his HP pavilion and needed more power. The PSU didn't come close to fitting so he velcroed it to the top of the case and ran the cables through the opening left after removal of the old PSU. It's working great. I suggest adding a case fan over the opening to provide more air flow. This is far from elegant and would not be my first choice but it worked fine for him.

I suspect  this may get some interesting responses. :)

Both my sons have the X51, just put a 960 in one.  The power supply is External.....a large brick looking thing, probably can't upgrade it.

Passmark is showing the $800US 1080 with 50 samples since mid May at the top of their chart.

http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html

They're not showing the 1070 yet, but it's supposed to be shipping. I gather that AMD won't have a product in this category until next year. Their recent announcement is for a $200 competitor to the previous nvidia top end cards. Sorry, it was late last night when I read that on one of the tech sites and don't have a link.

I'm hoping for a factory overclocked 1070 with the better cooler for the $380 price point from one of the better vendors.  :pray
