Yes but when it's determined that driver less cars and trucks are fare safer then human controlled automobiles the government will just mandate that only automated traffic can use the federal highway system.  It probably won't happen within the next 10 years, but perhaps the next 20.

I don't think so, I know that some of the software behind these systems are very sophisticated.  What I don't know is that radio wave emitter in your side view mirrors to protect your bind spot is radiating at a constant and is not shielded , it's not a directional beam, it's radiating in a 360 degree arch and the drivers head is 6 to 10 inches from the left mirror, a few feet from the right mirror and that's just the radar, the lidar is a laser beam projected out the front of all the cars and trucks to  recognize the roadway ahead and each side of the road, it's projected in a 180 degree arch.  it's a laser beam of light that is projected from all the on coming traffic and all the traffic behind you, that laser light is reflecting off of all the mirrored surface.  So when you adjust your rear view and side view mirrors, you will directing all the laser light emitted from the  traffic behind into your eyes.  No amount of laser light projected into the human eye is a good thing.

If it's LIDAR based it is very susceptible to interference. Low sun on a wet road can freak it out, as can bright LED lights. LIDAR jammers use a set of bright LEDs on the IR frequency to block police LIDAR.

IMHO self driving cars are a load of cobblers. They are ok for very canned environments but take them off well formed/well marked/well controlled roads and they quickly become scrap metal.

at first it was, but you slowly start to trust it each time it behaves how you expect it to.

someone cuts you off, it has already braked and given space for them, switching lanes is really cool too.

they have redundancy, lidar AND radar, if one is struggling to get a read, it will alert you to take over but, its still able to drive.

Tax money for the highway system will drop if people can't use them.

You will still pay the tax included in the purchase of fuel, if you mean tolls collected, I believe that the largest cost of our highway system is the human toll collector and his retirement and medical care. I've read an estimate that in New Jersey we will still be paying for the Toll Collector long after the last one has retired.

Texas doles it's toll roads, which are still very much frowned on here, out to sub-contractors.

Toll roads are a huge rip-off. Use our tax money to build them then charge us to drive on them.
