Congrats!

As a long time ed reformer on the policy and charter school side? Teach Like a Champion and John Gatto.

TLaC is all about classroom management. Gatto is about the techniques that make your students deep, critical thinkers that value freedom, and can empathize.

Bfoot Congrats, I've been teaching a long time.  Now if you want advice .... I say this:  With classroom expectations/discipline start high and be tough, real tough.  You can go from tough to easy but you NEVER can go easy to hard! seen may teacher fail at this.  Next understand that all that pedagogy they taught you in school will only get you so far (down the runway at 70mph but never wheels up). Understand the difference between teaching subject matter and teaching students. (Read Up on Parker Palmer)  Understand that if you get it right  teaching is like sailing or flying.....you have to respond to the current, winds, tides, each student brings. Teaching if done right is an art.  Finally, your resume might have gotten you the job but your human relation skills will keep it.  Be kind to everyone! <S> 999000

I can confirm this. In the 8th grade my class went through 2 science teachers before they gave us a veteran.
the second ( a 22 year year old man) literally left the class in tears after we as in the entire class loaded  alka seltzer into test tubes of water and shot the stoppers at him en masse. Course there were other worse things that led up to this point. But that was the final straw.
