Did I fry my video card?
« on: August 30, 2016, 01:37:21 PM »
GE GTX760 driver 372.70 running on DX11.0 under Windows 8.1 64

Hey I was playing Aces High DX11 and ended up with a black screen where my computer screen said 'no signal'. Yet I could hear the sounds of the game. I could even hear changing throttle settings. I restarted the computer and re-launched AHIII, the screen blanked again a few seconds into the game, I hear a fan running full speed when this happens. I tried Elite Dangerous, same stuff, 1-2 secs into the game itself (fine in the menus) I get the 'no signal message'.

Otherwise I can browse online all day long.

Dust and dog hair inside your video card cooler? Sounds like it shut down to protect itself.

It could happen like that, but it's rare. You might try to clean your system of all video drivers with the display driver uninstaller (DDU) and then install the latest drivers.

A black screen is a sign of temperatures building without the fan keeping pace. It's possible the fan is frozen, or that the drivers have become mixed somehow and are not controlling the fan properly, or that the PSU or PCIe slot or not delivering proper voltage. If you have a second monitor you might have GPUz up and watch the voltages as the games run, but I would clean the drivers and reinstall first.

Thank you. I have a G20 so it's m one of these slim case. I noticed something loose inside. I remove the video card and dusted everything off. It was actually barely dusty. The loose thing was one of the plastic pillar with the spring that supports the video card. I re-installed everything. With the cowling off, everything runs again. Maybe a bad connection? Maybe heat build up? I'll see what happens in the near future.  :salute

Well, at the very least make sure the fan is still turning and changing rpm as the graphics load increases. You could modify the global settings in Nvidia control panel so that you maintain peak performance, rather than the default "adaptive" setting.

If the plastic pillar with the spring was one of those holding the cooler on the video card, having it loose allowed the cooler to tilt slightly which allowed for overheating.
