AH3 Engine Sounds too loud in some planes
« on: September 20, 2016, 11:58:42 AM »
It would be good to have all the engine sounds at somewhat close on engine sound levels.  A B17 is a good example of a very loud engine compared to say a P-38.  I know in real life the engine sounds would be quite different but in a game where you switch planes with a click of a button.

I haven't examined the audio files, of course, but normally the sounds are normalized to something like a maximum of -6db with digital sounds. I started there in my first audio pack, but changed it later under pressure of complaint. I should have left it alone.

I am planning on just updating the engines (tracks, guns, and turrets) and leaving the flaps and landing gear alone, because people complained that they couldn't hear those things in my sounds. I had done that on purpose to match what you would have really heard, but just like the complaints now people didn't know what they were complaining about. I think.

I miss the sound of the twin merlins on the 38.  I thought a storch was headsing for me and a P38 flew over.

The P-38 Allisons were relatively well muffled by the superchargers.

Merlins? Uh, . . . no.

I stand corrected
thanks, twin allisons sounded sexy also.

There was some talk throughout the war about fitting the P-38 airframe with a pair of Rolls Royce Merlin XX engines. However the War Production Board was unwilling to shut down the Lightning production for the several months it would have taken to retool for the engine swap

The construction of the P-38 would never have supported the power of the Merlin engine. If it couldn't do its job with two Allison engines, then the Merlin would have been overkill.

I suspect the P-38 was kept in production just to keep every factory busy. The overall kill ratio of the Lightning was only 1.5:1, which compared to the Mustang, or F6F, is dismal.
