This hasn't been posted yet, so I'm going to chime in with compliments to the 49thFG- Fightin' 49'ers.
The 49th pressed V88 with an attack that accomplished two critical objectives for that mission. First they destroyed most of the AA defense. Then their astute egress (based on the AK IP and direction of attack) pulled the fighter cover off the target. This enabled most of us to get a bomb off and then follow up with multiple strafing runs.
The AK's were delayed twice on the approach to the target. First by what we thought might be an outbound Axis strike to our north and, later, the presence of a scout south of the target...who went north during the 49th's attack.
Last, we'd like to call out Gooss, a very competent pilot of the 327th Steel Talons. He was a single and attached himself to our group. It is said by Monty Python that "nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!!!". Well certainly, no Luftwaffe pilot expected a Spitfire V in the middle of a P-40E interdiction mission!
It was a great frame and well fought on both sides.
Thanks again 49er's!
