This A6M2 was flown by Petty Officer Hajime Toyoshima as part of the carrier Hiryu's Air Group. In February 1942 Toyoshima flew as part of the IJNAF's four carrier strike on the Australian port of Darwin but after his plane was damaged by anti-aircraft fire he crash landed on nearby Melville Island. Captured by the Australian army he was sent to Cowra POW camp where in 1944 he was shot during a mass breakout attempt by the prisoners. As he lay wounded he slit his own throat rather than be recaptured.
