Computer Problem
« on: November 29, 2016, 04:49:52 PM »
The past three weeks my main computer randomly starts up at night.  Not every night, but it did it last Monday and Tuesday night, and again this Monday night.  One time it did it before my eyes, twice in a few minutes.  It stayed off the third time I powered off.

I've changed nothing except Windows and NVidia updates.  I double checked all the computer power and wake-up settings, they look fine to me.

The computer runs Windows 7-64 is connected to a Comcast router, has no Wi-Fi and is protected by Norton 360.

Anyone have a suggestion?

There's lots of options that can cause this starting from Windows Update. The worst scenario I can think of is that your modem is infected by a virus and is waking your computer up using your network card (Wake On LAN). Anyhow, here's some good reading about almost all of the potential culprits: http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/how-fix-computer-keeps-waking.htm. This link was mentioned in the previous one for scheduled tasks like WinUpdate.

As for Wake On Lan, I'd disable that in the BIOS prior to Device Manager to prevent any driver update to re-enable it.

If your modem/router is infected, reverting it to factory defaults may help. If not, updating the firmware might. If not, getting a new one is the last option.

If this is a power off start up.  Could it be a bad or loose wall plug?

This is a head scratcher. Ive never heard of this one. I dont see why the modem would have anything to do with it but there is the possibility of a virus.

Going to have to go into CNTL panel and check power management settings and while your there check your event logs and see what they say about the start ups.
