Good Anti-virus program
« on: December 02, 2016, 03:20:43 PM »
WHat is a good anti-virus program?

Been using AVG but they want a yearly subscription now. Is Avast pretty good?

Any other suggestions?

I hate both of them as they have been messing with AH3 forever.

ESET is about the best for a gaming system.

I use Avira on mine. Just have to click out of their "please buy me" pop up now and then. Updates regularly, and has caught a thing of two on my wifes computer  :O Love her browsing habits.

Do you want good AV or free AV? They are mutually exclusive.

Another vote for ESET. I like it because it only nags when it needs to be renewed, and it has a pause feature for those times when you are playing AH3. You still have to adopt a policy of in-pausing before you browse, or rebooting once you exit the game.
If you like the Sick Puppy Custom Sound Pack the please consider contributing for future updates by sending a months dues to Hitech Creations for account "Chalenge." Every little bit helps.

If you go for a free one, I've been relatively happy with Avast. However, there's some tricks to be done both during and after the installation. Similar tricks have proven to be good practice for many other installation procedures, too.

The first thing when uninstalling AVG is to first run the regular process in Programs and Features. Then run the AVG Remover utility to get rid of what the uninstall has left behind: http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities

When installing Avast, choose the Custom Install. By default it gives you all of the options checked, even the paid ones. If you leave it that way, the paid options will do some checking every once in a while and ask you to buy them to fix the issues they've found. Instead, choose the Minimal Install from the drop down menu. From the left column you can then add a couple of features if you so wish. File Shield and Web Shield are the obvious choices and definitely needed, Mail Shield is a good one if you use a specific e-mail program or app but it's unnecessary if you read your mail using your browser. Browser Cleanup and Browser Protection can be useful. The rest are either paid or unnecessary.

After having installed Avast, add an exclusion for Aces High, or even for the entire C:\Hitech Creations\*.*

I just use Windows Defender.  It is free.  Never had a problem with it.

Jimmy the real key to protection is avoiding exposing yourself to virus.  Simple things like watching for emails from people and places you don't know.  Or people you do know but with unexpected attachments.   Avoid sites like gambling and such.

...same here, and agree with the second point.   :salute
