I've had good luck with Gigabyte. Basically any brand but EVGA at the current moment. They are trying to fix the issue but people ordering their new cards are still having issues with cards catching on fire.

I would have gone with Gigabyte (the EVGA card is on it's way) but the comparable card was another $50xx and I scratched the other four manufactures from my list for personal reasons before I started.

I will add that Gigabyte (I do like their products) makes a shopper jump through hoops to compare their video cards to other vendors, and even within their own lines of cards it's click, click, click....

I guess it's time to google EVGA fires.  :O

Okay, there is a risk factor, and potential RMA involved. The card I have ordered is on the list of shipping cards with revised BIOS as of 11/01/2016. A forum user on another site claims EVGA is adding the thermal pads to new shipments but that isn't what the EVGA site says. They offer to cross RMA if you want the thermal pads so If I don't see them, I'll insist on a replacement card.

This issue may explain why EVGA is the only mfg offering discounts. You can bet I'll be registering this card for the warranty.

It is good to hear they finally fixed it. For a while there they were honoring free thermal pads but not actually admitting that there was a problem with their cards. I personally know of one person who's 1080 fried his entire computer and EVGA said their card was not at fault and there was no proof the card did that to the whole tower.

I like EVGA as a company, but they really screwed the pooch this time.

Yeah, there are some companies I'll avoid like the plague. I can only imagine your friend was one of the early adapters and paid the price for being on the bleeding edge of tech. Been there myself, lesson learned.

I hope your friend was able to get compensation, at the least for his hardware.

Oh, and I'd be surprised if they ever publicly admit to the mistake. I suspect they'll do everything short of that to avoid a class action suit. Not the way I'd chose to go but I'm a cynic when it comes to most modern corporations. HTC is one of the good guys!

UPDATE December 1, 2016 ~~ The card arrived a few hours ago now.

It turns out that the EVGA gtx 1070 08G-P4-6276-KR cards offered by Amazon at $409 must have been cards from before 1 November. Before I opened the box, I found the serial number and checked against the EVGA site. That saved me completely opening the box and finding out that the pads were missing. That's the bad news.

I doubted that an RMA through Amazon was going to accomplish the Post Nov. 1st factory upgrade and decided to go straight to EVGA.

From unpacking the Amazon box, finding the serial number and registering at EVGA, probably took half an hour to 1 hour.

The good news is that once I registered, I found the techsupport 888 number and Kayvon (thankfully he spelled it because my old ears heard Kalan) was able to help me through the process. Yeah, I've seen the videos of doing the upgrade, and it'd make sense if I already had the card for half a year, but for a new card still in an unopened box, nada. I hate it, but I'd rather run the cross RMA route.

For anyone wondering how this supposedly works: I'm step One of Three now. I have an EVGA Advanced RMA number and I'm waiting for the "Approval." Apparently (Step 2?) they verify my purchase invoice and then ask for my credit card number in case I fail to return the card I received. Sounds reasonable to me. Then they send a new card. Kayvon guessed delivery might take another 3 to 5 days before I have the replacement card. I expect to swap the cards (retail boxes) and return this one in the box the new one comes in.

Wish me luck. I'll keep you posted.

All has gone well for the cross RMA on my 1070 08G-P4-6276-KR purchase.

I'm adding EVGA to my list of favorite vendors.

The card is silent as death. A huge improvement over my old AMD 6850 and only once was I able to force the frame rates down to 49 with everything at max, including the Environment. Amazon isn't listing it any more but New Egg shows it.

The only problem is that I still suck at playing the game lol.
