Effects I'd like to see
« on: June 26, 2000, 12:25:00 PM »
Some effectd that I'd like to see in the near future are listed below.  These are not anything huge, just small things that I feel would increase immersion.

1. Stars on a dark night.
They wouldn't need to be in the form of constellations, just random stars.  Kinda like the sheep in the sense that they pop-up as you get closer to them.

2.  A moon on a dark night
A simple crescent with the same luminescence (sp) as the clouds have at night would do.

3.  Exhaust flames at night
This would help you spot enemy aircraft without icons.  It could be a tamed-down graphic of the fire that comes out of the guns when fired.  Aircraft that were fitted with flame "reducers" on their exhausts should not get this effect.

4.  A windsock on top of the tower
This will let you judge the wind speed and direction at a glance.  The windsock should sag when the wind is light, and be nearly straight-out in heavy winds.  There should be a small light shining on it at night to make it useable in the dark.

5.  Working lights on AC and vehicles.
A landing light on a B17 would be a nice effect, and help you perfect your landings in the dark.  Headlights on the M-16 and M-3 could help illuminate a target, as well as illuminate terrain.  Lights could be shut off when an enemy aircraft is spotted.  Nav lights (res and green) could assist squad and formation flying in the dark, as well as adding to the immersion.

6.  Illuminated bomb-sight
The black cross of the "norden" makes prescision bombing at night tough. (Maybe it should be   )

7.  Barrage balloons over the city
These would dicourage jabo attacks.  Can be popped easily, but will "re-rise" every 15 mins.  Flying through the barrage balloon cable should also damage if not destroy planes.

I agree with all except barrage balloons. IMO they wouldn't serve  any purpose other than another flight assignment to take  them down.

If not now, I hope they get barrage balloons by the time we get a Navy.

If we're gonna add "night effects", I'd like a dimmer for my instruments.

I don't think HTC currently have any plans to implement night in a more serious fashion than at the moment, and I wouldn't expect any changes soon, but if we keep this up they'll see there's an interest in nightfighting. Keep the ideas coming in, night's a tricky part of sims to handle and can get dull fast, so the more simple the ideas to implement the more likely they are to be considered, and the nightfighting element could well snowball from there

I've asked before about some items that would add greatly to playablity:

OIL
The canopy should get coated with oil after  an engine hit, making it difficult  (impossible?) to see out the front.

Cracked Glass
Shots to cockpit should spiderweb the glass  in the cockpits again effecting vision.

Blood/gore
Like in Jane's WW2 Fighters, when a pilot is  wounded blood splatters inside of cockpit  effecting a pilot's view out.

Instrument damage
Random gauges destroyed/inop when cockpit  takes damage.

Ground Clutter
Trees and buildings with random heights,   that can't be turned off making low level  transit/escapes a bit more tricky, and  giving the ground pounders stuff to hide  behind.

Rocks and Boulders
Imagine tooling thru a canyon chasing a  bandit, then shooting a Rocket over his head  to dislodge debris on him, or yourself if  your timing is not right.

Planes that keep flying/diving after pilot is dead. It gives a much better satisfaction IMHO to see your target go all the way down on fire instead of just the instant firework.

The night is still to weird for me now.. for example the fact that your cockpit is lit so brightly I can hardly see outside anymore. I brought this to HT attention, told me that was the internal lighting. But the angle of te light changes when I make a turn..
So it almost seems to me that the Sun lighting effects are still in place for the cockpit. Any ideas?

How about country flags instead of windsocks.

Exhaust smoke:
Countless of combat reports states that the pilot could see if the enemy opened of closed the throttle depending on the amount of smoke coming out.
This apperantly also lead to some RAF pilots claiming LW A/C in BoB. (They saw the 109s "smoking").
(Note: this is very much 2nd hand information).

I like that suggestion Daff. Just a little tell-tale smigget of light density smoke would do.

Anyone remember the F4 Phantom?  That baby sure smoked wicked!

Daff

There are bursts of smoke depending on the throttle, but it's by no means a constant trail. It's especially noticable when the german a/c engage MW50, a huge cloud of smoke pours out of the exhaust pipes for about 2 seconds before the engine "adapts" to the new engine destroying power. When the engines were firewalled from a lower throttle, small puffs of smoke would be emitted. Also a cool thing would be to have the exhaust fires(?) that shoot out of the exhaust pipes upon startup. That would be especially cool on the zero where the exhaust is clearly visable from the cockpit! =)
I always wanted the startup burst of fire since I saw a, I guess, edited picture of the A6M5b for WarBirds back in 1.07 I think. It looked cool and it was on the list of "features" but it was never incorported for whatever reason or maybe it was just a BS rumor.. but it did look cool!

I would like some more sounds added: 1 When flying in formation, you should be able to hear the other planes. 2 When on the ground, you should hear a bomb going off next to you. 3 Maybe the whistling of bombs as they are dropped (as heard from the bombing plane).
