Update on my "best bang for the $" AH build

SO far I've been happy with it.  Just added 4 PWM case fans to replace the 2, 2-speed fans that came with the case, and an HP Omen 32" 1440p 75mhz monitor.   Flew a few sorties online tonight, frame rates were mostly 74-75 in flight, sometimes dipping as low as into the 50's flying close to a lot of ground detail.  All graphics settings set to max.

Curious, what resolution are you running? I have a 1080p monitor which I can max out with the 1060 GTX 3GB but wondering if get a 4K monitor if I'll have to dial down the settings.

Oh and FYI for my build I ended up with a i5-6600 which I wasn't planning on overclock ingredients, however my ASROCK MB apparently gave me the option of doing so it bumped it up from stock 3.3 ghz to 4.3 ghz. I was actually planning on the i5 6500 or the i3 6100 but their prices jumped up some when I was checking out anduring the 6600 had a combo deal. Anyway based on our previous core discussion I'm wondering if it's even worth over clocking.

 I also went with a gtx 1060 3gb based on your recommendation and so far it's working great.

Curious, what resolution are you running? I have a 1080p monitor which I can max out with the 1060 GTX 3GB but wondering if get a 4K monitor if I'll have to dial down the settings.

You can test that by disabling V-sync. If you get a constant 240 FPS or more, you'd get a solid 60 with 4K because 4k equates four 1080p monitors. I have serious doubts about the 1060 being powerful enough for 4k, for what I've heard even 2.5k is on the edge.

I actually mispoke... I'd like tp upgrade to to 2560x1440. Right now I'm averaging 100+ with vsync disabled.

As important as in any fast paced game. Think about two planes nose to nose at 500 mph. How many frames would you like to miss? A response time of less than 10 ms is preferred. Less than 5 ms would be better. It also depends on how it's measured.

Lots of 1440 screens have 100hz, 144hz, or even 165hz.  The entire ROG Swift line from Asus - I have 3 of them, 2 27" (one IPS one not) and a 34" 100hz - work great.  There isn't a huge difference between 60 and 75hz, but jumping up to 100hz or higher is a major improvement in how the image looks while gaming - with every game - compared to 60hz.  Acer makes decent equivalents, as does BenQ.  IMO a 24" 144hz monitor I would take over a 27"/1440p/4k/etc of equivalent price.  Of all the "gaming" options in an LCD, be it size, Gsync, 2k/4k, etc, I would choose 100/144hz+ capability first over all the others. 

Atlau, you can find used ROG Swift 27" 1440p/144hz monitors for $400USD from time to time, that's what I'd hunt if you're looking for a good 1440p monitor.  Gsync as well if you are running nVidia GPU.  New they are $650, and the IPS/165hz version is about $100 more usually, but if you hunt around PC gaming sites with for sale sections, they often come up for sale used.      https://www.amazon.com/27-inch-Monitor-PG278Q-Response-Display/dp/B00MSOND8C/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1481684871&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=asus+rog+switft

The 1060 card you have is fairly equivalent to the 980 cards I had before Pascal came out, and I could run AH3 beta in 1440p no problem, with your system you'll be fine @ 1440p, and push that 144hz/fps most of the time.

Does it need to be 1440p?  Acer makes a fast/decent 1080p VA 35" curved panel, I've seen them set up in the shop, very nice for a 1080p, and it has Gsync.  They make a 1440p version, but it's IPS and about 40% higher in price.

AOC has some decent 34/35" too.  I don't know much about using TVs for primary gaming use, there has to be some options in that 34-ish size that'd work for you too, I know there are a few guys here up on what TVs are best for this.

One of the screeens i've been looking at as an alternative is the ASUS PB328Q - 32" 2K WQHD (2560x1440) @ 75hz.

As you say 100hz instead of 75hz would make quite a difference - partiular for flight sims, but until 100 hz screens at 2560*1440 show up there are few options if you want a larger screen.

My aim is to buy the Nvidia 1070 card to drive the monitor, and shy away from the Nvidia 1080 due to cost.

Currently I'm, using a 27" VA Benq at 60 Hz knit to an overclocked Nvidia 780, and want to step up the experience one notch or two.


4k gaming is awesome but over my budget right now.

Sorry for the late response, am spending some time in Thailand and have been away from AH for a bit.....

I've been running all graphics setting maxed out for the most part.  I've recently upgraded to a HP Omen 1440 p monitor (https://www.amazon.com/OMEN-HP-32-inch-QHD-Display/dp/B01J90PKPG) and so far am loving it.  My system runs it well, all though I do need to turn things down a bit on some maps, typically Enviorn mapping only.....but think the $ that I would spend to have everything maxed out all the time are better spent elsewhere.

My machine based on an i3 6100 & GTX 3GB 1060 runs an HP Omen 75 mhz 1440p monitor quite well.  I picked it up on sale for $300.....it's a dramatic improvement over my old 22 "  1680 by 1050 Chimei.

If you belong to the brave you can overclock the monitor using a free program, just overclocked mine from 60 to 70hz, it really makes a difference rolling a FW190A into a SplitS.
