coming soon to the AVA--Battle of Leyte Gulf
« on: March 02, 2017, 07:02:11 AM »
the Battle of Leyte Gulf

Battleship task group--may or may not be in the battle. still in planning stages

eye candy

our plan is a battleship battle with aircraft for recon only. ships would have to find each other and then head into the
battle with their fleets or ships. there will be 2 carrier groups with recon planes.
the idea is to have a ship on ship battle. the ack is so bad on these things, almost nothing can survive I assure you.

heres a little research and background for you: http://militaryhistory.about.com/od/worldwari1/p/leytegulf.htm

please, all comments are appreciated. feel free to add comments or questions, we welcome them.

I'm very excited to see this attempted. Way back in the early days of AH, I was on the events team, and did a similar scenario. We had a Philippines terrain that had ten or twelve fleets. As part of the set up, I blew-up all the CVs except one for each side to launch scout planes, then jumped five of the now cruiser-only fleets per side to within a short distance of each other, and started the scenario. Mind you that the set up was tedious, but it was a fun scenario nonetheless. At the end, there was only one CC and maybe a couple DEs left to the winning side.

thanks man, this will be mostly battleship on battleship. hopefully I can make it work. the terrain is made, now its just a matter of getting the battleships to behave.

The actual Battle of Surigao Strait, which I'm assuming you're emulating here (though not necessarily trying to accurately recreate), took place at night. You might consider dialing down the light to a twilight level to simulate this. It'll also result in shorter engagement ranges, I suspect. Also, the opening attacks were conducted by PT boats. You might consider allowing each side a limited number of PT's to launch early in the scenario (even though only the US had them present at the actual battle), and maybe also at the end, once one or both sides have lost all their capital ships. I don't know if you're fleets are already created in the terrain, but if not, I'd recommend creating them with the capital ships line-astern, with DDs flanking both sides. Also, it would be great (if it's do-able) to have some sea level cloud banks dotted around, to simulate patches of fog and/or isolated rain squalls. Playing hide-n-seek in the fog/squalls would add an interesting dimension to the battle. Finally, you might add the objective of requiring at least one Japanese capital ship to reach a certain location on the map, which would be conveniently on the other side of the American fleet, to insure battle is joined. This would simulate the Japanese objective to reach Leyte Gulf and the American beach head.

I'm going to use as much of your information as I can and ill see what I can do about using low level cloud files for fog.

we're still trying to get the hanger right in the battleships, but as soon as we do, we'll run with it.

ps. if you ever want to get back into it, pm me. we always need help in the AVA with setups and such.

Sounds good, Cap, and thanks for the invitation. Life's pretty busy right now, but if it settles down, I may take you up on it. Regarding the hanger issue with the BB, I understand HiTech is working on a solution. Fingers crossed, as this will be soooo much cooler with the BBs. Now if he'd only give us direct helm and speed control! I used to play a table-top game called "Battlewagon", and my love for big-gun naval warfare is exceeded only by my love of airplanes (which, I suppose, is why I joined the Air Force instead of the Navy...it was a close decision).

I had the opportunity some years ago to go aboard the Missouri before she was decommissioned (Scout trip). We got to go to the bridge, the citadel, and into one of the main gun turrets. One of the questions asked of the naval officer conducting our tour was, "How load is it in the turret when the guns fire?" As it turns out, it's one of the quieter spots on the ship when the 16-inchers fire. You sure didn't want to be out on deck!
