Blue Water / Green Water Navies
« on: March 07, 2017, 11:41:53 AM »
A really good point came up in a wish list.

A Ship's CO would be drawn ad quartered for bringing a CV right up to the beach...

In WW2 Pacific Theater, a lot of the attacking fleets to shore were loaded with Marines.  Most of the carrier operations weren't within range of shore batteries.

My wish:

For every port.  Have a Blue Water Navy (current fleets in AH3).  Then, have a second fleet associated with the existing fleet and said port.

A Green Water Navy.

Would love to see a Cruiser, 4 Destroyers, and perhaps 2 LSTs.

In concept, you could draw the carrier fleet within strike range (usually just outside of enemy DAR circle.).  You then bring in the Green Water Navy (Marines) to launch LVTs and tanks.  (edit:  don't change anything with the current fleet.  They can still bring it in. and all current functions remain unchanged.)

Not too sure how difficult it would be to program but lets say when the green water navy is within a certain range, the LSTs beach and tanks (M18, M8, M4s) can launch right on the beach.

Make the LSTs killable (perhaps 4000 pounds of ord to kill?).  Perhaps make the same ord to kill a LST as it would be to sink a cruiser.  Obtainable by the defenders and possible to get a good attack going by the attackers.

Thought it would make for a good conversation piece and maybe a wish come true at some point in the evolution of AH3.

Thanks for listening to my jibberish!

And where would the battleship fit in this whole plan?  :headscratch:

Or did you forget that they created and put a lot of work into one? :joystick:

In general, I like the plan, and have advocated for something like it in the past. I'd nuance it even further. I'd leave the current cv fleet (call it a CVBG, for "carrier battle group") exactly like it is. I'd build a new fleet type, the SABG, or "surface action battle group", which would have a BB, two CC, and four DD, along with a single LST. Having the ability to beach the LST would be problematic without some serious code changes, I should think. Perhaps instead you could make the LST a mobile VH hanger with spawn points in a compass-rose around it (say, a mile or two in length?). As long as a spawn point arrow is touching land, you can use it to spawn GVs onto the beach at that point. You'd still be able to spawn LVTs into the water as you do now, but from farther out to sea. I'd suggest limiting the available GVs that could spawn from the LVT to medium tanks and smaller GVs. If the LST is sunk, no GVs would be available.

To be clear, I'm not against this one bit.  I whole heartily agree with this.  :aok

I'd like to see a bombardment/invasion TG as well, but with the BB as the core ship.  BB is the core, with 1-2 CA's, 4 DD's and 2 LST's.

Not so sure we need a second type of fleet, but I would like to see the TG kept far enough offshore to keep puffy ack away from the field and town.  Maybe let the LVTs spawn farther from the fleet.  Amphibious invasions are some of the best fights in the game -- on both sides -- just don't like dodging puffy ack over my own field/town.

With all the armchair admirals in this game and the fact everyone pays the same $14.95 to enjoy the toys in the game. How are you really going to get all of those assets to show up anywhere together at the same time to work the way they did in WW2? The CVtsg0 object and the BBtsg0 object can defend themselves and project 8 and 16 inch salvos along with fighters and bombers. We know how long the CVtg0 CV and cruiser lasts once someone decides to level bomb them or even keep showing up with two 1000lbs for suicide attacks. The BBtg0 only has a BB, DE and CV even with the massive amount of auto ack the BB generates.

MA game play eats task groups as soon as someone wants to get serious about bombing them. You park all that hardware on a beach and someone will walk a string of 1000lb down the beach from 20k. While jabo will beat them to it much of the time because it will be fun to grief the tank drivers who are hoping they will get on the beach. And they will be a spawn campers wet dream the way the MA works unless you can completely flatten the field before your task groups are within range.

To make something like this work so only a single armchair admiral steers all the boats, be semi historic, and defend itself to get those tanks on the beach. Your wish needs to be for a tsg0 object that creates a super fleet with all your blue\green water craft that a single player controls.

The AvA terrain builders have more lee way in building terrains, vastly expanding custom task groups and restricting aircraft. They have done just that with the new battle ship on a new terrain.

Loving what I am hearing...

Either a super fleet (I like)

Or perhaps You set the ports differently so the fleet gets tied to a specific port.

I understand the spawning would be the only factor.  How to get the spawn to work by getting tanks on land.

Truly I didn't realize how close the BBs are.  Put the BB with the fleet protecting the troops...

Much potential IMHO.

How about?

Every port spawns 2 fleets.
One carrier fleet with the standard prefix C.
Add a second Invasion fleet, with the prefix I.

The CV fleet can remain as it is.
The Invasion fleet would use a BB instead of the CV.
Also several LSD's, landing ship DOCK, as seagoing VH's
Everything would spawn from the LSD welldeck.
An ability to stop the fleet, would be needed for this operation.

Including LCT, Landing Craft Tank, which could hold 6 tanks.
The tanks could use their mainguns from the LCT.
An LST was not designed to beach while under fire. LCT's were!

Some spawn adjustments would be needed, to allow players
to spawn their GV's inside their teammate's LCT.
So he could carry them to the beach, while they provide
the gunpower to fight their way in.

If a BB is to be added, BB class shore batteries should be added.
There were many different forms, 12 14 15" take your pick.
I favor the Sevastopol BB turret style, because of the 360deg traverse.

The Big shore batteries should be vulnerable to air attack.
That is what made them historically obsolete.

Just some ideas,  :salute
