Pagefile used/free in Dxdiag reports is always virtual memory (physical ram + emulation via swapfile on HDD/SSD), it doesn't give any information how much of the swapfile is really used.
With 8 Gigs of RAM you'll probably see a pagefile report in the 12-16 Gigs range of which a large part is used.
Without SSD it's like the Superfetch service filling all your RAM with programs it believes they will get used soon.

The DXDIAG report tells how much is used out of the available amount regardless if Windows is managing the pagefile size or a person manually sizes and manage the pagefile

This is not necessarily true, and when trying to diagnose or give advice to someone about either helping them with performance issues or upgrading... you never want to see a Windows OS reporting that it is using a "large part" of the available pagefile right after a fresh boot

SSD's are different, so different that in some cases, one might not even need a pagefile set up...

also, not everyone uses "Superfetch" service....

Hope this helps

If what you are saying were true, then how do you explain my page file used, for my computer?

Memory: 16384MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 16328MB RAM
Page File: 297MB used, 31029MB available

At the same time this was run, the task manager shows physical memory usage as follows:

56MB reserved
1518MB used
439MB standby
14321MB free.

Win7 x64, no pagefile:
Memory: 16384MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 16382MB RAM
Page File: 3470MB used, 12909MB available

Win7 x64 VM, without and with 512MB swapfile
Memory: 2048MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 2048MB RAM
Page File: 522MB used, 1525MB available

Memory: 2048MB RAM
Available OS Memory: 2048MB RAM
Page File: 579MB used, 1979MB available

All reports made with 64Bit version of dxdiag, it usually matched RAM use values from resource manager (except VM with with pagefile). I have no Win 8.1/10 to test but I doubt they have changed the behaviour of the report.

You just showed the page file usage to be what is used on the disk, except where you had no on-disk page file.  You do realize when you specify no page file on the disk, Windows 7, and later, creates a memory based page file?

The 512MB page file is smaller than the recommended size so Windows, again, will use some memory to (the swap map/virtual map) to free up as much page file as possible.

In none of your examples is the page file size the total system RAM plus the disk page file size.  Of course the first example is going to use available system RAM as Windows has no choice as you did not create a disk based page file.  Note how that number changes when you do create one.

Were the ones you created managed by Windows are fixed size?  That will also impact the amount available.

Good morning Skuzzy,
Please correct me if I posted any incorrect information in my reply above (Reply# 16 of this thread)...I'd truly appreciate it

To me it seems as if Denniss is using a SSD for his OS drive and set up with his pagefile disabled, I could be wrong with my assumption

Using Virtual Machine (VM) , I don't care to use VM/OS data for comparison purposes for I think it is to easy to manipulate, being able to set the parameters of the VM to one's liking

Roy, you've really got your system super tuned it seems, very impressive 297 MB used .... I haven't been able to get a Windows 7 64bit OS under around 460/455 MB's used...

Cheers

You pretty much got it.

As far as my low page file usage, that was after a recent boot.  The thing about my system is I have absolutely nothing starting to boot time, and many of the remaining services are set to run manually, rather than automatically.

It all helps make it boot quicker without impacting any run times for applications.
