I have been chosen to host an ADS-B receiver
« on: March 19, 2017, 03:10:05 PM »
Been using Flightradar24's app and site for a while, and happened to stumble on the section to host one of their receivers. Filled out a quick application, then a few days later got an email as a follow up to request more location data, shots of mounting locations and horizon visibility from all four directions. Submitted it and to my surprise I got an email back saying I was approved to be a host. Five days later got an email with tracking info and three days later got an express package from Germany containing the kit

In the kit was the receiver itself

Shielded ethernet cable, GPS antenna, power supply for ADS-B receiver, and an external antenna (jetvision.de 1090 mhz antenna)

Pretty much plug and play. Have to send an email off to the support dept when its online for them to confirm data is being sent. Took longer to route the antenna and gps coax then it did to plug it in and get it on.

It isnt the perfect setup as I dont have horizon to horizon view, but I have gotten responses from about 175NM, average being 150MN due to trees around the block.

In exchange of being a host, I have a free business plan and free use of the premium flightradar24 app. Only downside is the equipment is still the property of flightradar24 and I can not use it to share with other sites. Also if I decide im done with it they will take it back. Not bad to getting my feet wet in the world of ADS-B. I have just recently ordered myself a Raspberry Pi 3 and ADS-B hardware to play with one of my own to try out more more experimenting.

My assigned radar name is for this receiver is F-KENL1. Anytime you are browsing aircraft in southern IL and see that as the radar, then my little hosting site is providing the data :)

WTG :aok

We have been quoting a TON of ADS-B out installs for the last 3 years and now are starting to see the sales. We just completed a Challenger 604 and have a Gulfstream G100 in next month for ADS-B and WAAS/LPV. The business is really starting to pick up ahead of the mandate. It's going to be RVSM all over again. :x

So what does this do for you?

So what does this do for you?

As far as the aircraft operators, it adds a level of reporting to ATC. It links the GPS/Nav Computers to the Transponders to provide the additional info, heading, airspeed, alt, etc.
ADS-B stands for Advanced Discreet Surveillance - Broadcast, or ADS-out. ADS-B is mandated for 2020 and already for most of Europe and Australia. ADS-in is what Meatwad has as he is receiving the discreet signals to provide third party flight tracking.

In exchange of being a host, I have a free business account and free use of the premium flightradar24 app.

I get more out of a learning experience on how it works more then anything. I downloaded a program called virtual radar server and it shows real time exactly what aircraft I am currently tracking with my setup. Here is a screenshot of what im looking at right now. Overall its pretty neat to mess with

Is it ADS-B out or just a receiver?
