Well, looking for options
« on: March 17, 2017, 09:54:54 AM »
It's about that time for an upgrade. I'm looking to see what everyone recommends for upgrades. I would like to have the option for VR if one day down the road i decided to get it. Heres what I'm currently running. Currently running 1 monitor at 1920 x 1080 and one tv at 1920 x 1080.

Well looks like you're vr ready now except for a video card and possibly adding  a USB 3 powered hub. Looks like your computer only has 2 USB 3 ports.

You can always upgrade the motherboard/cpu/memory later if needed.

Official Oculus Rift Recommended Specs (really minimum specs):

    Intel i5-4590 equivalent or greater
NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD R9 290 or greater
    8GB RAM or more
    HDMI 1.3 and 3x USB 3.0 plus 1x USB 2.0
Windows 7 64 bit or greater

Recommend a video card similar to MSI Gaming 1070 with 8GB GDDR5 or better:

So ill just need a new card, maybe a new power supply (not sure what mine is), and i'll be good. I already run a USB 3 powered hub. I wouldn't be able to survive without one. Also, how easy is it to install these suckers?

Install video card?  Push lock, disconnect wire, remove card from slot.  Insert new card, attach wire.

Keep in mind, for VR you'll need at least one USB 3.0 free for the rift.  Original docs called for three, but amended as the cam, or cams if you run the touch controllers, run off 2,0 just fine.

And yes, make sure your Power Supply is rated for whatever new card you buy

Youtube video showing ASUS computer video card and power supply installation.

If your computer has 500W you're good to go, if 300W you'll want to upgrade to 500W.

Do you have the M51AD or M31AD computer? The M51AD could come with 300W or 500W p/s while M31AD came with 300W.

If existing power supply is 500W and doesn't have required video connectors you could get adapters but would be better to get new power supply. Some video cards come with adapters.

Make sure power supply you purchase has matching connectors for new video card. PCI-E 6 pin and 8 pin (the 8 pin is split so you could us it as a 2nd 6 pin). Seasonic is excellent brand for power supply.

I have a rift - Win10/64bit, Intel i7 7700k CPU, Asus mobo, 16GB DDR4 ram, ASUS nVidia 970GTX 4Gb.  1Kw power supply with lot of cooling fans.  NO OVERCLOCKING.

With this setup, I can run the game with defaults for details and the Oculus and it's 'silky smooth'. (Mind you, I have a DK2 but still it's silky smooth).

For VR you'd need a GTX 970 or 1070 or better. The new 10## series aren't too power hungry, some 600W is sufficient. If your current PSU is powerful enough, just make sure it has the power connectors needed for the vc you're getting.
