Monitor upgrade
« on: March 21, 2017, 03:09:52 PM »
Hi, Im looking for a little help here, I am fairly limited in the knowledge on monitors but I am keen to upgrade to a good one.
I am using a 27" tv at the moment and the resolution is a tad kack ..1360 x 768.. hence the desire to upgrade.
I have  Geforce GTX 960 4gig oc gpu.
Here is the dilemma..I will want the monitor to last a good while, might update the video card in the future,VR, so dont want to be constrained when that happens,
I want a 27" monitor because I am used to that and by all accounts it should be 1440, 1ms would be nice and 144hz (being greedy?).. But am I pushing that for this card
any thoughts would be greatly appreciated from this group of pc savey individuals
Many thanks
Jimmy

I have i7-4790 CPU, 3.60 GHz
8gig ram,  64bit

If you want a 1440 I'd say get a little bigger than the one you've been using now. Something like 30" would be nice, even 35" would still look sharper than your current one because of the smaller pixel size. The actual size doesn't add any load to your card, the higher resolution does. The 960 should work reasonably well on a 1440 @ 60 Hz, but it would certainly struggle with 144 Hz on that resolution.

So you can't fulfill all of your wishes with that card. If you can get a 1440 @ 144 Hz running slower, it might be a long lasting option, giving you more features when you decide to upgrade the video card.

For AH, the rest of your system looks capable enough.

Thanks Biz..you always deliver man!
Can you just explain how you would get the 1440 @144hz running slower..
Is there a setting I can adjust?
So I can go ahead and get 1440 144hz
Does the refresh rate come into play 1 ms v 4 ms?
Cheers

You can set your hz to 60 in the GeForce control panel if you find 144 isn't working for you.  I'd just leave it at max, but there is a pull down to lock hz at various numbers.
