New Build - New Question
« on: March 31, 2017, 08:35:05 AM »
So I think I have the new system pretty much put together and put together correctly - I hope

but I got a PSU plug that I have no idea what to do with. It appears to have come pre-wired to 2 fan control switches on top of the case (DIYPC D480-BK-Window Black Dual USB 3.0 ATX Mid Tower Computer Case with Build-in 5 x White Fans (2 x 120mm Fan x Front, 1 x 120mm Fan x rear, 2 x 120mm Fan x top), Fan Controller) and I have installed the ASUS 970 PRO GAMING/AURA AM3+ AMD 970 + SB 950 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 ATX AMD Motherboard.

Anyway, I have a SeaSonic 620W PSU and there is a plug that looks like an IDE plug:

and on the plug is stamped 'Fan Controller Power'

but I got no idea where it goes, what it does or what to do with it.

So . . . if anybody is familiar with the PSU and can tell me what, if anything, this plug does or goes, I would really appreciate it.

As soon as I find out about this plug and whether its important or not, I will get this fired up (and hopefully it won't actually catch fire) to see if it will really work. Once I find out if I got everything hooked up right and is working, then it will be on to installing drivers and then the wonderful task of installing Win 7 Home Premium (64-bit) and all the updates that go along with it. Then on to downloading AHIII and seeing what all the hoopla is about.

Thanks for any suggestions/comments,

Vance

Looks like it's meant to power a "fan controller" unit, a piece of hardware that I suspect you don't have and I've never had on any of my puters.  I don't think you need it......something like this:  https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811999280  So I suspect you're ready to rock n' roll, but you may want to wait for confirmation from one of the more knowledgeable guys....

Disregard this thread. I think I got it figured out.

Just fired the system up. All 5 of the fans worked. The CPU fan is working and it beeped.

If I remember correctly, when it beeps its a good sign.

Thanks DaddyAce, but I found a little blurb about the controller on the last page of the very light owners manual for the case and the controller plug needs power in order for the speed switches on top of the case to work.

After find this and the correct cable (this PSU comes with a crap load of all kinds of cables for most any kind of configuration you could possible think of), I got them connected and when I fired the system up - the speed switches actually worked with the fans. And with all the fans running on high, this thing is not near as noisy as I was expecting.

So now I am off to get drivers and OS installed so I can move on the game.

Hooray!!!!

Got a problem and need some expert help.

I got the system up and running. I am trying to get Win 7 Home Premium installed via a portable USB DVD drive, but the DVD drive don't seem to want to work.

Because drivers haven't been installed?

If that's the case, how do I get the OS installed and then all the necessary drivers?

I have an internal IDE CD/DVD drive, can this be installed or does it have to be a SATA drive to work?

Thanks for any help

You cannot use a portable USB drive to install the OS unless the motherboard BIOS has a setting to allow you to boot from the USB bus.  Even then, it may have to be a flash drive, not a portable CD/DVD drive.

I use a flash drive for all our operating system installs.  Much faster, plus I have all the updates built into the flash drive version of the operating system as well.

Hello Vance,

if I recall correctly, that ASUS Motherboard bios has the option of setting it to where it will boot from a USB Flash Drive

click on and read the following link, on how to make a Windows 7 iso bootable drive:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool

this webpage will send you to the following page ( Download the top Recommended link ):

http://wudt.codeplex.com/releases/view/37074

once you have followed the instructions on creating your Windows 7 iso Bootable USB Flash Drive, look in your Installation &/or user's manual and you should find where after you turn the computer on to boot up, if you hit [F-8] it should load the manual "Boot from ******" window, to where it gives you a selection of drives or DVD/CD/BD roms or Memory card types, etc.. or USB

Note: once you have created your Windows 7 iso Bootable USB Flash Drive, have it installed before starting the computer

Hope this helps

When you say you have an  internal IDE CD/DVD drive, are you saying that it has the  IDE ribbon Data Connection and the 4 prong Molex connector only?

or is it one that has both a SATA power connector & a Molex Power connector, with a Sata Data port ( Sata Power connector is the larger one,  Sata Data port connector is the small 1/2 the size one )

you did not give a picture of it, so just figured I would ask, I have some older Hard Drives that have both the old Molex 4 prong Power connection  along with the Sata Power Connection......

TC . . . the CD/DVD I am referring to is older than the second coming of Christ so it only has the Molex power connector and the IDE data ribbon so I guess I am either going to have to wear out my 4GB USB drives until I can get a new optical drive ordered in cause I tell ya, this not have the optical drive and trying to install drivers sux a big one.

Props on diving in and building it yourself, lots of help from members here is nice to see - good components too, I have a WD Black 1gb from 2012 still going strong in my AH3 system to run AH on due to the small writes/SSD deal.

Thanks Gman.

Things sure have changed since the last time I built a new system and it took me the better part of 2 full days to get it all put together and running correctly (I hope). Hells bells, I just got sound on this thing. Seems I plugged the audio into the comm plug. How dumb is that?
