Updating my 51
« on: May 26, 2017, 01:28:22 PM »
Greetings,
Like everyone, i've been busy trying to update my p51 skin, a very slow process.

Firstly i'd like to give a big shout out to Mr Vraciu for the enormous amount of time a patience he has shown me with help and feedback on using the new skinning system. Thank You.
Also to Oboe, who has answered my questions when ever I felt the need to ask.

Having said that, all mistakes are my own.

Well done.  Light years of improvement compared to your original.  :x

I'm sure you'll get constructive feedback from the gurus but it looks like a completely different machine.

:aok

Glad to be of assistance, sir.  I just passed along what Devil, Greebo, Skuzzy, Fencer, Oboe, Hitech, etc. shared with me.   It's nice to see it working favorably via translation.     It was fun working with you on it.   What an amazing thing the internet can be.  :salute

<S> FTJR!   She is looking so much better!

The elevator hinge shading looks a but wide, and I have discovered there is no shading on the flaps hinge border - its flush.   Sure is nice to see the metal shine though~

Yeah,  maybe knock a one pixel width line off the aft elevator shadow.

The flap gap maybe the same thing.   Aileron gap looks nice.  I need to steal that and your fuel caps.  Lol

Where's the original?   I can't find it for some reason.

V, if you are looking for it offline you might not see it if you already have a bunch of uninstalled P-51D skin folders - the P-51D is full so the additional offline skins you add bump existing skins out of your offline display.

You should be able to see it online though.

Great improvement, FTJR.

What stands out to me most that I would correct is the blue hue on the metal fuselage and painted portion of the wings. The parts look too close to the same color for being both bare metal and silver paint. The contrast looks good on the wing itself, so it may be a result of the environment map on the fuselage. I'll give the same tip I gave to Vracui - bake in the blueish highlights only to the metal parts and keep silver paint in the pure gray scale.

Another adjustment I'd make is to desaturate the red on the fuel caps and stencils, maybe even darken the shade of red a bit too. It seems to light and bright to me.

Overall this is a very well done skin. Great work.

I thought the same about the wings but didn't mention it because I wasn't sure if that was intentional based on photos.

The fuselage metal looks good to me though.  I wouldn't mess with it much--if at all--or the tail.

After looking at it....

Almost seems as though the flaps and the wings need to swap colors.  Then it would be right on.

I think...

You can also adjust the hue of the wing paint layer to reduce the blue.

All the bare metal and control surfaces looks blue on my end.

Blue is okay.

It's just the degree.

The fuselage and NMF stuff is fine IMO.   At least for a first revision.

A fresh eye tomorrow will reveal more.

Take a look at my Jo-Baby or some of Fencer's 51s for a hint on the gray for the wing.   I learned a lot by looking at Fencer's 51 wing and by Devil's 109 that had all the varying effects--metal vs paint.

Even if you don't get it 100% I would still submit the revision this tour.  It is a definite upgrade.

The fuselage and the tail look true to me.

Something is not quite squaring up the flaps with the vators if they are the same thing.  Take a look at the spec maps just to be sure.

I think the fuselage is like 98% right on...   I wouldn't mangle it much just yet.

Well done FTJR, its a good looking skin and likely to be popular with Aussie players. I'd say that elevator shadow still looks too big though, to my eyes it should be half that size.
