Is that a free game?  I can see where there would be less concern about community interaction with a free game.  Who cares if someone stops playing a free game?

Hiya Skuzzy... yes Wot can be a free game but if one wants to get
into higher and better tanks, You will have to have alot of patience and alot
of playing time   :bhead

Sort of apropos to this discussion about Steam (although it might also fit in the VR forum).

Here is a site that displays LIVE player counts in Steam-related games.

I bring it up because these types of sites, by linking to Steam's API, may also help bring in players, in that they list the games with most players in live numbers.

uh that website is missing about 99% of the games, and players actually using Steam right now... if you really want to know how many people are playing a particular game, go to its community hub on Steam and it'll say on the top.

WOT is like the new breed of game that says it is free but you play folks who pay to be better. If you want to compete then you must pay too. People with gambling addictions have the worst problems with this type game. It feeds on their weakness.

About 2 months back there was a story out about folks losing their home and more because of the tens of thousands of dollars spent.

Indeed, these new payment systems are made to be more addictive then previous, its what competition has conjured.

That's true, Krupinksi, but it's probably because that particular site is geared only to games that support VR, so it's possibly filtering out everything else on Steam. I just happened land on that one and the secondary aspect that it could possibly direct interest of Steam users to AH occurred to me, so I shared it here.  Since AH is a game that supports VR, that site would probably pick it up too.

It does not show Elite:Dangerous, one of the penultimate VR games. (Currently 5.5k in play via steam)

Interesting.  For me, it does show Elite Dangerous, with 5045 players online as I write this.

Oh well, take it for whatever it's worth to you.

I found the problem, I had to check "show no-VR supported games", which was off by default.  :old:

There are a few issues with Steam.  One is privacy - you literally sign your rights to any information you give them away, meaning they can mine your computer system for info, as well as your account, sign up details, email etc and sell or supply them to third parties - they do have a disclosure agreement you can look up to see what you're agreeing to though.  Another is the steam client hooks into your operating system to run anti-cheat / DRM stuff so the software is a lot more invasive then your regular amazon software store, its more similar to an antivirus program.

I run steam games but I have a modified DLL to do so because I don't like those sorts of programs on my computers.  When I close my game I don't want it to continue running on my system or updating itself automatically when I login without asking my permission.

Lastly there is some controversy over the valve anti-cheat system.  VAC is an automatic cheat detection system (see above).  If you are banned by the automated system you can lose access to your steam games.  The problem is Valve will not discuss the VAC ban with you and you are banned for 3 months, not only on your account but all accounts linked to your phone number - if your kid downloads a cheat from the internet and the VAC detects it, bye bye kids account, your account and all accounts connected to that phone number, and all the games you've purchased.

I say screw that, I don't use steam but if I did I'd be immediately banned most likely.  Seems a bit over the top to me.

very few games are supported by VAC, most are source engine powered.

I play CSGO where cheating is rempant, and these rules are not enough to deter the cheating and many want more intrusive software.

Note that modifying a steam dll is not legit and could get you a VAC ban.

Also accounts are personnal and not to be shared. You can setup a steam 'family' so other members of your family can play your games when you are not, as long as these games don't have a third-party login (lile aces high has)

AFAIK there is now nothing you can buy with real money in WoT that you cannot buy with credits, including their "premium ammunition". People pay to grind faster.

That is true. They pay to be competitive.

I've made my Tier X tank in WoT without in game purchases.  I have bought tanks with gold I've earned in game, but the grind was real and not impossible.

IMHO Tier V-VIII are the most fun anyways -- Tier I battles are great too.

I have tried WOT, but hate trying to use mouse and keyboard controls.
