Dueling Arena
« on: October 03, 2017, 11:31:36 AM »
Suppose I am going to try to open an alternate Dueling Arena - though I've never created one or really played in one much. I will try to figure it out today but I would love some suggestions as to what you'd like to see. Also, if I create the arena, does it ONLY stay open if I'm in the arena itself? And if I create it, does that mean I host it? (off my connection)

Thanks.

The arena stays open as long as anybody is in it, and 5 minutes after that.
It's hosted on the HTC server.

MickyD is the best person to talk to about making a dueling arena....honestly his one from AH2 was the best to have informal 1v1s on.

Agreed. Don't know if it's possible to port an AHII map over?

You will need all the original files, then you can do a conversion to AH3 from the AH3 terrain editor. If you don't have them, it's not that hard to create a small terrain for use in the Player tab area. It would be a good way for you to learn terrain building and you can contact Esayscor to get a link to his PDF manual. You can make very tiny terrains for use in the Player tab area as long as you meet the basic upload requirements of the HOST uploader.

5-10K canyon with elevated takeoffs approximately 10 miles apart. <--- This is very simple if you only want a 10k high island about 15 miles in diameter. Set the elevation tool to 6mile dia, and 10000 elevation. Then click in a 15mile diameter blob of land with your mouse. Then make your alt brush 3mile dia and 1000 elevation, and cut your canyons with your mouse. Add 3 airfields 10-13 miles apart, make them one of each country. Add an HQ for each country off in a corner and you have a terrain that should pass the HOST upload req. It won't be pretty but, you guys don't really care about eyecandy....do you.... :lol

There will be a few house keeping chores Easyscor will get you through like creating a clipboard map so you can see the terrain and running the error checker and leveling square objects to the terrain. But, something that small should take about a few days to a week. Versus the monster I've attached screen shots from. Oh!! get Easyscor to help you place the map room on the airfield so you don't have to deal with towns since all you want is to duel and furball. And if you only want two airfields, stick the third country airfield with it's HQ on some tiny island out of the way. This way if it's only a single big island, you don't have to create a blue print art file in 1:1 8pixel=1mile scale to design it to scale, then keep track of your monstrosity's production process. A 15mile dia land blob is finger painting with the mouse since you have a 1x1mile, 20x20mile grid to guide you. Also make sure the project name is in small letters and no more than 8 letters or, you won't be able to open the terrain to get into a tower. Now if you do goof with the naming convention, I'll tell you how I fixed that one after I thought Hitech had rolled out a bug in the patch I updated with that day.

Otherwise it's just mind numbingly time consuming if you are creating anything larger than the central furball island on the current terrain I'm finishing up.

I'm sorry I don't quite understand what you're asking... As far as who will be allowed? Anyone and everyone that pleases.

Sure is a beauty! I like the looks of it already - and from what you've just told me, I couldn't even imagine the hours into it. I thought it may be cool to add something unique / a little eye candy but nothing huge as it will be done on my free time. Though I was thinking maybe 3 islands like that, or 3 areas, like 5k 10k 15k or something. maybe just 5 and 10. Thanks for the tips though, I didn't really realize it was such a job.

Getting this so I could login, fly around and take screen shots took 15 minutes since nothing is fancy. I just opened a test terrain I use for ideas, set the elevation brush to -1000 and wiped the work space clean. Then I set the brush to 10000 and plopped down an island, set the brush to 1000 and cut canyons, then used a smoothing tool to mush it all about. Plopped down 3 airfields and set the distance measuring rings to 13mile radius and moved them into a triangle. Another 45 minutes and it would be setup to pass the HOST upload test looking grungy. A secret to not numbing your audiences brains, throw in a small bit of color contrast like that gold color terrain tile I mushed in really quick.

There is no right or wrong way to finger paint mushing around terrain. Just open the terrain editor and start mushing at it. Easyscor is an incredible living reference.

15 minute quicky dueling terrain, 10k plateau island with 9000ft deep canyons.

This is all great info! I definitely would've been screwing around for this for quite a while. Lol. Thanks so much sir.

Also, is it possible to do in-air spawns?

Lastly what exactly is Easyscor?

Thanks a bunch  :salute

Blinky. Your best bet at success is to use a very small arena. The steal the sheep map would be a great map to use. Make all the sides one team, turn of killshooter, add an air spawn. Eliminate the 262 and 163, maybe the Temp too. You are good to go.

Spawns are an object called entpnt. If you set the type to fighter entry and uncheck terrain alt and can collide. Then give it an alt of say 15000, your fighter when using that spawn direction will air spawn at 15000. Contact Easyscor and talk to him about all of this. A single island terrain with only three airfields will not take much to make pass the HOST upload test.

You use an air spawn for a combat arena, eventually people will circle the spawn and grief someone. Once you put it on the HOST, it's free to anyone who wants to use it as a custom arena under the player tab and there is no way to protect that kind of a spawn. You can get truly confusing by placing the two other airfields hundreds of miles away on tiny islands with their HQs so it takes awhile for anyone to get back to your dueling island. Then turn off killshooter and have everyone up from the same airfield. You can even set two air spawns to the same alt 10 miles apart.

The size of your terrain is determined by the size of the clipboard map you set and that will be the port hole your players will see and play inside of. The arena will be a 500milex500mile area with all the area outside of your very tiny port hole out of play. So yes off in two corners on the terrain work space 250 miles away you can place tiny islands to hold the HQ and one airfeild with a map room on it for the other two countries. That is a minimum req to pass the HOST upload test.

So yes, PM Easyscor to get this rolling.
