The black cowl was probably anti-glare, the black extended onto the upper forward fuselage to the canopy on some pre-war aircraft and on early war Kates and Vals. The colour varied slightly depending on the manufacturer, Mitsubishi-built aircraft used a bluer shade of black than Nakajima-built ones.
