Are in-game aircraft crash explosions considered objects?

If so, can the explosion object be given motion parameters?  When an aircraft which has been shot down impacts the ground, I think I see a brief, small explosion graphic effect with fire and smoke, but I'm wondering if the angle of impact is shallow, could the explosion graphic be given motion along the ground, initially set to the impacting aircraft's horizontal component of velocity, and then rapidly decelerate to zero?   Would that look more realistic?

I hit a plane with the shore battery and it created a crater in the air where the plane used to be.
