For Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of Vichy French North Africa, the USN assembled seven Wildcat fighter squadrons operating from one fleet and three escort carriers. They engaged the Vichy French Air Force throughout the three days of fighting until the battle was won. VF-9's Wildcats flew from the carrier USS Ranger and like all the USN aircraft that took part in Torch they had yellow ID bands painted around their side and lower star markings.
