The Vulch

January 2nd marked the day we lost one of our real life WWII flying aces. His name was Fred "Buck" Dungan, age 96, who lived in the beach town of San Clemente near my home. In reading his obituary and his other earlier WWII recollections, I found that he and others in his squadron vulched Japanese planes landing and taking off on Guam in his Hellcat off the USS Hornet. The link is to an interview he did with a local newspaper when he was 90 years old. I liked the part where the Japanese pilot saluted him just before the Japanese pilot's plane hit the water.

Orbiting at 10K above the airfield and dipping your nose to lob in a 55mm from a 410 is a great way to vulch a fully up airfield.
