Virpil T-50CM with base review
« on: November 10, 2017, 01:02:24 PM »
Picked up the Virpil T-50CM from Andrei at VPC during a recent trip. Got the base and desk mount with it as well. I've had a few days to mess around with it now and I love it. Build quality, feel, precision, all top notch, couldn't be happier with it. I didn't like the feel at first with the default springs and cams but now that I've changed them out to the soft springs and hard center, softer end cams, it's a completely different (better) feel for me. It just snaps into place when centered on the roll and pitch axis/axes and rolls through both axes with a ball bearing and cam mechanism that is ultra smooth. Buttons are another high point, very crisp click feedback when pressed or actioned. This stick is not meant to be sitting on a desktop but mounted into a cockpit, or, like I have it, mounted to the desk with the VPC desk mount. I highly recommend the desk mount, it's rock solid and very adjustable. The height of the stick really gives a more precise feel, you can add extensions if you need to as well. Besides function, this thing is a work of art too, you can see the quality of this thing just looking at it.
Overall, highly recommended, very well worth the price.

Fantastic - I'm building my new desk today, and will try out the mounts/base as well myself, I've really enjoyed the grip/stick in the Warthog base, but the best part of the T50 IMO is the gimbal and adjustability.  I'll set mine up as you have, and give it a whirl tonight.  The desk mount's are surprisingly cheap for what they are IMO.

I have the MongoosT-50 Flightstick and love it. I'm still trying to dial in the feel so it is perfect for me. I'm currently using the no center (I believe that's what it's called.) cam, and the medium springs, screwed down less than half way each. I found the stiff springs to be to stiff even if I didn't tighten them up, and the soft springs even when tightened all the way down just weren't stiff enough. I didn't care for the hard center or medium center cams I found them to be much like using a gated shift in a car. I found that with the no center cam I feel the center but I'm able to just flow through it if that's what I want. The only thing I would change is I would add a four way hat with push under the thumb. That would make the stick about as perfect as I could want.

The stick looks really great. Are their any pictures of what the Gimbal mechanism looks like? Seems like that would help in the decision making between it and the VKB stick.

Good reviews^^

I'm more and more impressed with this T50. The gimbal is sick, easy to customize it too IMO.  I'm still getting used to the elevator clamp stands, as I prefer to have my arm planted on the surface - and still do for AH3 if I'm playing it, but using the T50 for offline and Jet sims, it's really the perfect stick, so far.

I just got my T-50 and put a Warthog stick on it with the 100mm extension.

It's an improvement on my custom Cougar gimbals.

I clamped it to the board my Warthog used to sit on.

Everything went together easily and Windows and AH recognized the stick.

The default medium springs and cam work fine with the heavier Warthog stick. I'll play with the other springs and cams when I have more time.

If you don't need a desktop stick the T-50 base is very nice and is a plug and play option for Warthog and Cougar owners.

Virpil announced today that they in collaboration with BRD are releasing a desk top version base. https://virpil.com/en/blog/99-vpc-december-update

Looks very similar to the T-50 base, with exception of the bottom plate. According to the blog it will be using BRD mechanicals and Virpil electronics.

I always thought, before I picked up this T50 with the clamp on desk mount, that I would need a desktop stick but the VPC desk mount has changed my mind. I don't think I'll be going back to a traditional desktop base again.

I built a shelf below my desk to center mount the Warthog. When I got the T-50 I just cut the shelf back a little and clamped the T-50 to it.

I backed off the spring preload a bit with the medium cams and springs and it feels great. It can wobble around the center if I let it go under spring tension but it holds auto pilot with no deadband so it has a consistent center.

It feels like it won't break if you get a little excited.   :D

I've tried getting used to the desktop clamps, it's OK for jet and offline games, I'm still not confident I'll fly as well as I will with my forearm/elbow/etc being able to rest on the desktop.  I bugged Virpil in some emails about getting one of their old desktop units, I'm very happy that they are creating a new one with BRD (only company I haven't bought a unit from, BRD does have great reviews though so this is a win IMO).  I'll probably get a 2nd stick for the base, as I want to keep using the desk clamp the T50 currently uses for jet sims for now while I"m in VR.

Virpil is excellent, truly a well made product by guys that care, and know what they're doing IMO.

Can you set up your center stick so your arm rests on your leg?
