I'm sure it was done to bolster "community " in the game and to try and tone down the "country loyalty ".  How's that worked out over the years?

I have no quantifiable data to say it has changed anything, but it certainly could contribute to "country loyalty".

I will say this...anecdotally....I find myself much more aware of which side I’m on—and more resistant to switch—with chess pieces vs the colors found in Brand X.  YMMV.
