First look - P39Q 71st TRG / 110thTRS "Snooks 2nd"
« on: March 13, 2018, 06:35:17 PM »
This is an adoption of one of Larry's P-39Q skins - listed as 71TRS but that unit information turned out to be incorrect.  I still need to modify the paint chip and grime patterns but it usually helps me to throw up some screenshots at this stage.

P-39Q-5-BE "Snooks 2nd / Betty Lou 3rd" Serial Number 42-19995

Wartime History
Aircraft was first assigned to the 5th Air Force, 8th Fighter Group, 36th Fighter Squadron. No known nose art or nickname. Later, assigned to the 71st Tactical Reconnaissance Group, 110th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron. Assigned to Lt. William A. Shomo with crew chief Ralph Winkle from Milwaukee, WI and Mike Janigian from Fresno, California.  Nicknamed "Snooks 2nd" and painted in yellow on the right side on the nose. This aircraft was one of six that bore this nickname. Also, "Betty Lou 3rd" on the right side of the fuselage above the exhaust stacks and "Fresno, California" below, both painted in yellow, painted by the crew chief on the side of the fuselage, for his hometown and names of his brother's wives.

Shomo flew this Airacobra in combat over New Guinea. This aircraft was once was hit twice by a .25 caliber rifle bullet fired from the ground. During December 1944, this P-39 was abandoned at Tadji Airfield.

I think it is a little too flat, but other than that, nice job.  Greebo's is about as flat as they should get.  Take a look at the engine cowl specular/power of this skin http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,392110.0.html to see what I am talking about.  That captures the look of worn flat paint about as good as any skin does.

I am not going to reject it for that.  Just a comment.

Thanks Skuzzy, I'm asking Greebo what his spec and power values were for that cowl.  It does look great.

Here are some shots with pure flat maps - Spec value is x3F3F3F, Power value is x161616, and Env is x1E1E1E.  I think these are the hex RGB equivalents for the decimal values Greebo provided for his 64 GIAP Yak-3.   I can work with these target values I think to develop the full maps.

A couple of weird patches have shown up at the higher spec value and I'm not sure what I'm seeing - its nothing in my maps or diffuse file.  It must be built into the model.  The first is an triangular shape on the ride side cockpit door, and the other is just above the left exhaust stack and sweeps back to a point on the left rear dorsal area.

No idea what those artifacts are about.

Aside from that, I like it.

A dramatic improvement over the original, with due respect to the skinner.   And you did it so fast.    :x

Quite honestly, if those artifacts are not present with the flatter finish, I would keep the original settings.

Actually I hadn't reached the spec, power and env map creation stage yet, I was using the maps from an earlier P-39 skin.   And the current fix is temporary - they are just 1024x1024 bmps filled with a single grey shade.  But it does give some idea of the final effect, and gives me a target to shoot for.

Thanks all for the feedback.   I think I need to delete the "Snooks 2nd" art from the left side - this aircraft is described on the Pacific Wrecks site and they cover the art in detail, but do not mention nose art on the left side.  I think I may desaturate the blue in the US star and bar insignia a little bit also.

The artifacts are always present but get more and more noticeable at higher spec values, so its a matter of finding an acceptable middle ground.   It doesn't appear to be symmetric - that is, I cannot reproduce the same effect on the opposite fuselage side by reversing the position of the sun.

Now that you mention it, it does look a bit too bold. Also might be a bit too purple too.
