This bug has been brought up a few times, but often in other threads, most recently in the gun sounds bug report. I think this land/sea aim mode problem has existed since AHIII Beta (I recall mentioning it in a list of issues during BETA testing.) I don't think it has been mentioned recently on its own and may have been overlooked as a bug(?), so I am starting this thread for it.
Most recently mentioned here in the context of sound bugs:
the yellow range bar no longer calculated the correct range when I lined it up on the enemy ship.
Description of bug:Sometimes while in land or sea mode, when you move the yellow gunsight toward a target, the gun suddenly slews 90-degrees away from where you are aiming and cannot be fired in the intended direction. Instead the gun fires off in the direction it has slewed to well away from the land or sea mode aim point. This happens even though the target is
well within the range and the firing arc of the gun. You can manually turn the ship gun in the intended direction, but as soon as you enter land or sea mode (press Shift or CTRL + Q) the gun slews off target and cannot be aimed correctly.
It is an intermittent problem, but I think I have narrowed down these factors:
1) Only happens in land or sea firing mode.
2) Seems to happen most frequently
immediately AFTER a ship has completed a turn and has steadied up on a new course (after the ship has finished the course change "wobble").
3) When it occurs the gun seems to point 90-degrees away from the yellow land/sea-mode target as though it is not reading the aim point correctly. (Perhaps related to the boat having just turned?)
4) Seems to happen
mostly (possibly exclusively?) in rear guns.
5) I believe it does happen in 8" and 16" guns on CA and BB, but have noticed it mostly in (rear) 5" guns on the CV, CA and BB.
6) I notice it most often when switching to a new gun and entering sea mode (i.e. changing from a front to rear gun after a turn of the ship).
I think I have film of it, but when I have viewed the film of guns you can't see the gun sight, so I'm not sure how useful that would be.
Hope this information helps.
