Me 262A-1 Franz Schall
« on: April 20, 2018, 04:54:25 PM »
Me 262A-1 of 2./Kommando Nowotny flown by Franz Schall in October, 1944 from Hesepe, Germany. Schall is one of the highest scoring Me 262 pilots, with 14 confirmed victories and another 3 unconfirmed. Schall began his combat flying career in early 1943 with Jg 52 on the Eastern Front, attaining 116 victories there by September, 1944. It was then that he was chosen by Major Walter Nowotny to join the first air combat unit for the new Me 262 jet fighter. Schall scored his first kill in a 262, a B-24, on October 7th and was awarded the Knight Cross on the 10th. Schall was killed on April 10, 1945 when his Jg 7 jet rolled into a bomb crater, and exploded while he was attempted an emergency landing at Parchim, Germany.

Is the paint scheme a factory standard like 109 can be determined which factory built them or was it applied by the combat unit?

That was a factory scheme of the the early 262's. The colors are the green versions of RLM 81 and 82, to maintain the lowest possible contrast to match the reference photo and color profile.

Even factory applied paint would vary wildly in the pattern and heaviness of application.

Very nice, great job! <S>
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!
