amazingly very few bases were rolled while I was on and I think it was due to the constant fighting.
Two reasons. Yes, some switched to furball mode. The other reason is that it is pretty difficult to kill defending king tigers when there's jets furballing over the area. Any plane that carries bombs to take down those and town and hangars simply dies too easily under those circumstances (including the B29). No bombs, no capture (we tried strafing with 262s, it somewhat works, but needs too many sorties, rebuild time gets in the way).
