The space shuttles btw did not have an escape system (a way to separate the crew from the rest of the vehicle.).

By your definition, somewhat true.  They did have a way to abort the Shuttle from the boosters and a way for the astronauts to bail out of the Shuttle.

It was not possible to abort the launch while the boosters where burning. And any successful abortion after take off required that the shuttle was maneuverable.
