Stupid question number 1 from a terrain editor newbie
« on: January 19, 2001, 08:21:00 AM »
Hi All,
I know we are expecting a fairly big revision to the terrain editor soon but I thought I would start to have a "play" with the current version. Wow It's rather good init.

Question time...
How do you set a vertical cliff? (As in "The White Cliffs of Dover) for instance. Everytime I try to make a hill or plateau it generates a gradient from the surounding tiles. I think I've seen similar effects in other peoples terrains but dumbo here just can't work it out.

If this has been covered in a previous post just point me via a link or at least confirm one exists and I'll have another look the forum.

Thanks in advance

Select the nine points of a square with mouse.

 x---x---x
 |       |
 x   X   x     <---  this is a square
 |       |     (x's are the vertices points)
 x---x---x

The outer points are green and the center one is blue.

In the right side terrain tool box   SET ALT to what you want and right click mouse.

You can't get a prefect vertical cliff.

Thx Pokie,
(I was already doing as you so eloquently described).   As you say you can't get a vertical cliff face.

Oh well

It's still kinda addictive though

Thanks again.

I'm not trying to drive you crazy Nuttz but is this the info you are taking about.

You posted it http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/Forum55/HTML/000171.html

"Snafu, Look for a folder in here called "how tiles work" 3 or 4 folders down. That will explain how and what tiles can be used together.
Further theres an older post by 10bears i believe on how the transition tiles work.

heres how they work
draw a square, think of the square as your key pad ( numbers 1 threw 9 ) these are the 9 points of which you can elevate a single square. try this as a demo, tile a square and set 4,5,6,7,8,9, spots on the square to 4k elevation and 1,2,3 to 100 feet you should have 1 square that resembles a cliff ( if you use rock) now line a few of these up side to side and you have your cliffs."

When I do that set it doesn't give me a vertical cliff (90 deg.) its more like 80 deg. I guess.
