New terrain concept
« on: March 22, 2001, 12:57:00 PM »
If you follow the AH link from my site (http://www.gonzoville.com/DoK/), you'll see a terrain idea I'm trying to work on. This is a concept for a 3-country map. I'm using Bryce now - but I'll look at Terragen if it's better for creating height-maps.

I'm not sure how much time I'll have to work on this - kind of depends what a few venture crapitalists say to us in the next few weeks.

I'm also looking at some CGI's that will make building an online texture library a little easier and more organized.

I would love to test that out! Your reasons and the concept are very well thought out (hee hee hee, how many years of experience?).

At first I thought the sides were imbalanced in land mass size but what difference does that make when land/ground is all the same to aircraft? As long as the base dispersion doesn't favour one country accidentally more than any other.

NUTTZ has graciously offered to build an AH terrain based on my map design.

Nuttz will surely do a great job.

Can't wait, especially if he does any new textures.

He already is. He sent me the base terrain, with just default texturing.

Wow!

That volcano base is going to be insane. The lip of the volcano is at 15K (yes - it could be in the clouds!), the interior (where the big base will be) is down at like 5K. All kinds of spires and crags along the rim. Attacking that thing will be one of them "2 men enter, 1 man leaves" affairs.

The mountain range in the North has all these awesome ravines ... and waterfalls to the inland lakes (like a 12K drop down the cliff face to the lake ... yowser!). I had fun just flying around it.

That's all I had a chance to look at. I'll start figuring out where fields and strat goes this weekend.

PS/ I got the newest beta of Arcadia this evening ... if it installs OK, there should be a texture map library ready to load data into by Monday.

Damn doK. I'd heard you used to take the bull by the horns    I'm glad to see for myself.

If I can test it and provide some objective feedback please let me know.

Nuttz' is a nice ugy. Known him for about 3 years or so and he's of good stock

Very cool Doc!

That's very similar to a map I was working on (Which I will stop now). Basically mine looked almost like yours, except the Volcano was in the NW (I was going to have have it spew ash, by making the clouds rise out of it and then move east)

And then the land mass on the east was separate from the Northern Landmass with a large channel running north to south between the two large ridgeline/islands that carriers could traverse. The eastern landmass also had the H.Q. near a waterfall (Make the clouds come out a short distance at the base of the waterfall and it looks like the 'spray' at the base.)

Also, the Northwestern landmass was snow covered with ice floes to the the north. The eastern landmass was tropical. And the southern land mass was a rocky desert.

I can't tell what size your map is, but if it is designed for 256 x 256, I recommend you build it as 512 x 512 to prevent players from doing 'off the map runs'. What I mean is, design the land mass's as 256 x 256, but by building it as 512 x 512, there will be a large water buffer around the edges. It would also make the 'outside' edges of the land mass's more functional from a gameplay standpoint.

I can't wait to fly on that. Nuttz will do a great job.

Sofar this map is made. It needs alot of work. DoK will soon learn the true meaning of compromise.  Snow in the North, tropical south with the rest in the middle. Wish that could happen and someday I'm sure it will. At the present time it's almost impossible, I use the word almost because theres always a work around

BTW, at first glance I thought is was very nice, but wouldn't work. After carefully relooking at this with the Strats DoK has sent me, I have to say this is going to be a really nice map. A very Unique map with each country sporting it's own heritage.

Snow ONLY tiles with grassy rock. Hmmmmm.... don't tempt me on this.

DoK, I don't know how to repost old messages here on the BB, I would suggest you search for "The way tiles work" you'll get a better understanding the way AH TE works and it's limitations ( of which i don't follow ).

NUTTZ P.S. Thanx for the nice words guys

I expect off-map end-arounds. If you look at the rough strat layout I have on my site, you'll see I've spotted outposts and smaller fields along likely lanes of attack. Basically, it'll force people to fly a lot further off-map to make those attacks without their dots showing up on scope. And in a Lanc, that's a long, long time. (And it looks like I forgot a couple of strat objects ... forgot about training and city.)

NUTTZ, as soon as you figure out what our options are for the textures, we can make a call together on what to do. I'd love to have snow up North (so the Russian planes' camo works someplace), but if we can't, we can't.

RAS <S> I resubscribed for at least this tour. I wanna play in that senerio, sounds like alot of fun!!! Hey remember my first senerio in AW? I was the last one flying, and no ammo, no fuel and the CO was telling me to go get that bogie. That was sooooo funny. "Sir, I am out of ammo and have zero fuel..... Attacking bogie"

BTW i am "Rash" this tour i've always gave you a <S> guess you didn't know it was me.

I've been busy elsewhere, But am helping DoK skin his masterpiece.

Here it is:

I've put some other shots I took flying around up on my site. Note that the in-flight shots were what NUTTZ put together in like ... what? ... only an hour
