Public transportation is awesome when it works, and driving is a pain if the traffic is stuck and nothing is moving.
Private car is the most inefficient way to move people around. It requires huge areas of land for roads and parking and creates a bad air quality in cities, not to mention those who dies in accidents. A good public transportation system and limiting private traffic in congested areas.
But again: you need to do it properly if you want public transportation to work, as with anything else.
