Having a problem getting a MapMaker-created terrain to show up in AH Terrain Editor. I've renamed all pertinent files (i.e. files in the copied "blank" folder to hawaii, and the mmaker-created files to hawaii), so that's not the problem. I'm just getting what appears to be "ocean" in Terrain Editor. I'm guessing I'm running up against some kind of scaling problem, and am hoping some of you with more experience with these programs might be able to clarify some of the basics. Thanks.

Mr. Biggles, are you aware that when you first go into AH TE that you are in the center of the map? Just checking that first. You may have to fly around (In editor mode) to find the 'land'. Just wanted to check that first. Or are you saying that you have flown over the entire map and it isn't anything but flat water?

Thanks for responding, Sundog. When I get home after work I'll try what you suggest, although I can tell you that when I zoom all the way out, I've got a big blue square, which I assume means I'm dealing with just water. So, yes, the start location is right in the middle--of an all-blue terrain. If I click "go to nonwater=0" (something like that) it takes me to some actual terrain. But i would think that that terrain would be visible somewhere on the first screen (the all-blue one)?

I'm sure once I've overcome this initial hurdle I'll get a lot of work done. The interfaces of both programs seem very easy to work with.

Thanks again.

When zooming out, the max. size area that you can view at one time is 40 miles x 40 miles.

I'm not sure, but I thought that the map maker makes the terrain a 512 miles x 512 miles size.
So like Sundog said you'll need to fly around the map to find land.

When you find land turn grid on and write down the grid number so you can find it easier next time you open the terrain.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for in an answer.

You can also bring up your clipboard map (esc) to see where you are in the terrain.

Note!  I have some info that I have put together for myself.  Its not very organized but may be of some use to you.
You can Post here to let me know or email me and I can send what I have to you.

Finally, got it to work! I was able to find the islands, placed an airfield where Wheeler should be, created the terrain, and was able to fly around in AH. A little disappointed in the elevation accuracy, but expected that. Now for the hard work: fixing the minor inaccuracies of the island shapes, improving the terrain elevations, placing more objects and airfields, etc. But, at least I got this far. Thanks to all who responded!

Biggles,

You know you have to manually edit the Ko'olau range and Waianae range?.. Its real jagged in real life and the scan will show it as smooth.

Thanks, 10Bears. Looks like manual editing time. I did a long hike over the Koolaus back in March, from Moanalua Valley to Kaneohe. Click link below to check out the pictures from the hike.
